Hey… I just caught an episode of the anime ‘Shaman King’… it looked worthwhile, but I thought I'd ask for everyone's opinions first… ya know, before I decide to chase the TV episodes at ungodly hours when kids watch cartoons ;)

So… is it a series worth checking out, really?

(owie, just realised this may be the wrong forum… if so, I'm sorry… and this being the case, could it be migrated or something?)

never seen it… But I'll move this for you. I'm sure the comic mod won't mind something like that.

The series starts out good in comic form, but after the whole tournament thing starts up everything just goes downhill. There's also a lot of plot holes in the series and soon it becomes just about who has the “most powerful ghost” instead of about the characters themselves at all.

Oh. Well that's a slight let-down. Thanks for the info, though!

The tournament thing does seem to get down to rather meaningless fights. But at times you're willing to forgive it if there are enough side stories to make you connect to the characters.

Kxela: is it any good, then?

The 4Kids dub was horrible. There wasn't much more improvement to the DVD version of it either. It's a little to much of a kids show to be taken seriously. It's like it wanted to be a serious supernatural action anime like Yu Yu Hakusho or Bleach, but put too many adolescent elements in it that you usually see in anime like Beyblade or Yugioh.

actually yeah, I thought the first book was pretty good, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then uh I just started looking through shonen jump every so often. I knew it went into the tournament thing but there were some parts of where Yoh goes through some major training which did catch my attention. I've seen two english dubbed episodes but the manga is far better.

so..bad? Not at all. Except for when readers compare Shaman King with my comic :P
I actually want to see some subbed episodes though.. check it out

If you want a good and funny ghost-controlling anime, watch Haunted Junction! It's so under-rated…

XXXHolic is a great spiritual manga too. I'd suggest “You & Me” if you can find any of the old Ironcat copies of it.
