Smoking equals R-rated

The first R-rated movie that I ever was Ah-nold's “Commando.” I was 3. I was also apparently very distressed at the fact that everyone was killing each other. And… I don't actually remember this happening : P

I don't think that this would make it taboo for anyone, to be honest. I knew the simple facts about smoking when I was growing up: it smells bad, and it gives you cancer. Neither of those would be denied to me just because I didn't see it in a movie, so… what's the point?

Wait… you think it's a good idea for tobacco companies to super-explicitly advertise in children's programming?

I don't agree with advertising cigarettes on children's programming, but making movies 18 rated ('R' is the equivalent of ‘18’ right?) because they contain smoking is ridiculous. I've seen plenty of films with smoking in them, and I have never had any urge to smoke.
Hey buddy, you should be a Russian Cosmonaut, and here's why.

I'll be glad when smoking and smokers are gone forever. I hate breathing other people's smoke because they're too rude to not smoke around people in public places.

Good ridance… I hope this rating thing helps get rid of smokers.

I keep thinking of the LOTR movies. Smoking is in a lot of scenes because that's the way JRR Tolkien WROTE it. It would be pretty sad if they rated those films “R” or kept the scenes out for the “general” audience.

My feeling on smoking is it's either legal or it isn't. Making it legal and then trying to slowly ostroscize anyone who smokes is silly. (I don't smoke, by the way.) Remember the Disney movie Atlantis? Didn't the old lady in that smoke? Also, it's usually the bad guy smoking, anyway.

Yeah, because cigarettes are the cornerstone of all modern vices.

You know, it's all about taking some personal responsibility.

The responsibility to keep healthy habits, such as not smoking, and the responsibility to instill such values in your kids.

Worked on me. I never once felt the urge to pick up a cigarette, long before I realised that breathing smoke made me feel like my lungs were being grated.

I fully support bans on smoking in public places. Getting a breath of smoke makes me feel VERY unwell, cough until I feel about to throw up, makes my throat hurt really badly. Just one surprise breath from walking past a smoker in the street. I've usually been able to avoid extended contact with someone who is smoking, mostly thanks to a lot of restauarants etc. becoming smoke-free long before any ban was enforced. Working in a restaurant with a smoking section was, however, horrible for me, especially since you can't just start coughing out in the restaurant as a waitress, but neither is it a compulsion you can easily hold back on.

So I'm delighted with laws that keep smoke out of MY lungs.

But when it comes to other people, in their own homes, on their own time? You can't control that. People who start smoking are, I would expect, going to pick it up from friends, parents, relatives etc. long before they take it from a movie.

This is just a really silly idea.
