I thought of them as Overtones lol!
Especially the scene of the cross-roads at the end, hahaha, I thought that was lovely, not being religious myself.

What about the relationship of the “outsider” to society? Some films that deal with that in a non-mainstream way are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and El Topo by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Those are both Westerns, funny that.

Oh, oh, Don't forget Lars von Trier!
Zentropa/Europa would fit your category I think. I would also say Dancer in the Dark, but I think that might have been released in 2000 :(
