Agh, I'm so sick all the time and now I'm having allergy attacks with seemingly no cause and I can barely eat because I'm so scared of the reactions. I need a doctor to figure out just what the heck is wrong with me.

I went to see Avatar with my dad. My personal review is that the graphics are a huge step up from the last time I saw bubble world technology in a major film which was Speed Racer. Not that that's exactly difficult to manage I suppose. Overall, though the graphics didn't blow my mind though. I might be a bit jaded, given that I've been around it for a while now at school, but nevertheless it's pretty good rendering. Most of the settings seem heavily inspired by ancient Japanese and Chinese art work, most notably the floating mountains. Other stuff kind of reminded me of a mix between Fern Gully and the new Star Wars trilogy, but more realistic and a lot more bio-luminescent. Pretty cool to look at and I can kind of see why he might have said he was waiting for better technology to do it. Story was ok, your typical “guy meets girl, saves world” fantasy deal with what came across as a little hint of some ham-fisted environmentalism tossed in maybe. It was the graphics that helped you get into it better than if it had all been done live action and the movie really relied on that. Outside of the Na'vi, the character designs were pretty slick. The battle mechs were cool as they usually are, the heli's were straight out of a Ghost In the Shell-style anime, and the creature designs were all relatively logical and well done. ( ie; no freakish tentacled amphibians in a desert setting. ) I just wish they'd altered the Na'vi more than flattened noses, tails and blue skin, nothing major really so I don't even have an issue with that. The final fight seems a little less of a war and more a battle, but again no big deal. It was still a pretty good looking ending without turning into war-porn.

Overall, I'd say I'd give it about a 7-7.5 out of 10. The story and character development feel a bit shallow for the 10+ years Cameron claims he had the story sitting waiting, and at times it's the quality of the CG holding your attention, not the story, but it's worth the $10 for a ticket to go see it, if for no other reason than you'll probably leave the theatre with a bunch of things you want to draw out.

eh, didn't mean to babble that much. maybe I shoulda just made a media discussion topic for it or something. It's here now though, and I just wanted to share, not really discuss, anyway.

*sigh* too bad this thread can't evolve into a general decade old rant thread… Oh, well….

Wow… I went and took an offer to play an MMORPG for free for a few days. There was one woman there who kept bringing up an argument, and talking to her was like talking to a brick wall. She was so firm in her beliefs that to her the facts were nothing but fiction while all of her claims were either fiction or unprovable. Yet she was convinced that she and she alone was right. I guess some people are genuinely crazy without qualifying to be sent to the funny farm…

There's no reason the thread should close really.

Gah, stupid shift key.
Need to start using caps lock I guess, this shift key sometimes refuses to work.
Ha! That reminds me of chats with SpANG :)
One of the loveliest, most generous, friendly people you could ever chat to. Truly a nice guy.

Anyway, we'd be chatting away and suddenly he'd go all in caps, and the next things he'd type would be:
“ARRRGH, STUPID FAT FINGERS! STUPID CAPS LOCK KEY!”
That always cracked me up ^____^

Don't be silly, it's the 2009 Rant, Vent, and Share thread. No one will want to post in LAST year's thread. That's soooo unfashionable.

I was SO sure this thread would reach 250 pages, haha. Seems it's 10 pages short.

Still waiting for the proofreading of my stuff :/

Been brainstorming some big stuff in the meanwhile, but nothing definitive. Looks more like a new novel idea than anything and I wantto do some comics finally instead!!! Argh.

I've read Asterios Polyp last night. My brain is still recovering from all the cool things in there (the way the eye is lead from one panel to another, how the page layouts themselves add to the story, the design sense, the little symbolic things etc etc basically the entire package).

Surely would if I could. Alas, I merely paid for it as a gift. Wasn't my choice to get that model. I've made her aware of the shoddiness, at the very least. It's better for decorations than anything book related.

Wow… after watching Chowder with my youngest nephew I decided to look up a disorder mentioned in the cartoon. And I had no idea… Sleep eating is a real disorder, but not like in the cartoon (where Chowder transformed into an ultra powerful monster that raided all the food stores). So that's what all those midnight food bingers are suffering from…

Either that or Wikipedia's article is something best reserved for the trash bin…

yeah, sometimes reality's stranger than fiction. :P

like the woman who were actually seducing men in her sleep. She was unlike other sleep-walkers in that she was slightly far more fuctional in her sleep (dressing herself, and going out, etc).

and then when she woke up she would find herself in strange places in clothes that she didn't remember putting on. She was actually scared that she had a spilt personality. but no, it was a strange form of sleepwalking.
her husband were uspet about the other men too. =\

That's about a 50/50 chance with wiki these days.
It's only really reliable for certain kinds of information. Everything else is pretty spotty and you're better off looking at a real reference.

I think we should close it on a nice round number, maybe a break off on page 1000 which at the rate we're going will be two years from now. Just in time for the end of the Mayan Calendar.
You see it won't just be the end of the long count calendar and a new beginning for an enlightened New Ageier Personkind and the UFO Brothers returning to smother us in love and the Illuminati being destroyed by the Annunaki when they return from Planet 10 but also the end of the Drunk Duck 2009 Rant, Vent and Share thread.

I just want everyone to know I have embraced the year 2004 and bought an lcd tv tonight. But only because my perfectly good old tube TV was breaking! >:[ And also it was a pretty good deal (sharp 32" for £299)

Actually I say the old tv was perfectly good, but as soon as I tried out my DVD player and xbox360 with HDMI cables and saw that I had another 36 tv stations (most of them rubbish, and no bbc or bbc2????) I realized that this TV is in fact much better.

The sound on it is shit though, I wish you could test that out in the store. I can customize the sound a bit, but moving up the ‘bass’ slider isn't going to give it the real depth it needs.

I think they do it to get you to buy a speaker system or something. My "19 Samsung lcd tv I got for christmas has the same deal. I got around it by hooking it up to my computer as a monitor and using the computer speakers. Saves me the need for a DVD player too. It just kind of sucks that if I ever want to use it as just a tv I'm going to have to get external speakers for it.

I learn some strange things on Wikipedia…

I was reading about the NEW Mini (the one made by the people who own BMW I think). Apparently when they did the mockup of the car to show to important people they forgot to put in the exhaust pipe. Someone took a beer can, punched a hole in it and stripped off the paint, then stuck it on. And apparently the design was so well liked that it was asked that not a thing on it be changed. Now I know why the exhaust pipe of the Mini looks so weird… looks so weird… O_O

They should've. The plastic wheel arches and the black frame between the body and the roof looks so lame.

Maybe because they're not in “full HD”? Not all digital tv is in full HD so on a HD TV it doesn't look perfect. Also, without an upscaling DVD player (and even with it often), Normal DVDs can look pretty grainy at times.
With the TV it could also be reception?
