I liked Lilo and Stitch. Southpark Bigger, Longer, and Uncut was pretty awesome, too.

It's kinda a toss-up between The Land Before Time (The first one - the rest were crap.) and An American Tale(/tail?).

I would say One Piece movie 6 Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. Too bad it was only in Japan it was probably the best One Piece movie.

I just saw Grave of the Fireflies for the first time, and that's a REALLY good one….
But it was only by supreme effort of will that I didn't cry. ._. I mean DAMN. De-pres-sing.

Are people just posting every title of every animated film that they've seen? That's pretty pointless, especially since the topic sais just THE BEST animated movie you've ever watched, and not EVERY animated movie you've watched..

Nightmare Before Christmas was/is the best animated film to this date.

I thought the One Piece movie was pretty cool and it might even be better than Nightmare Before Christmas.

As a rule of thumb, anime movies based on TV anime series suck, regardless whether the series is good.

Because the movie cannot impact the real storyline, inevitably it's always a 90 minutes long filler, with movie-only characters which are at best forgettable and at worst inducive to strangling urges.

The only recent TV/anime/manga-to-movie spinoffs that I've liked are as follows:

1. Death Note 1 & 2 - I like the movie plot rewrites. IMO better #2 is better than the anime counterpart.

2. Bleach movie - I couldn't believe I actually liked it. Must be because the current Arrancar arc sucked the life out of the cast so much, this is better in comparison; the movie goes back to the roots of what made early Bleach episodes good.

3. Full Metal Alchemist movie - It's not great, but it is awesome in that it actually continues from the end of the anime, rather than be a 2-hr filler. I don't know how it compares to the manga. And things actually changed, unlike say Advent Children where nothing changed.

Actually I was naming all the animated movies that could be at the top of my list/others' lists. I still find it hard to pick one, just it is hard to pick my favorite live action movie. I'm not naming EVERY good one though, otherwise I would've brought up Miyazaki's movies (it sucks he retired) and most early Disney movies.

It's more that I was suprised to find a title like that Lord of the Rings movie in here, I mean that one was just bad, even if someone liked it, you couldn't clame it to be the best ever (you could, but you would be lying..) How can you put that in the same topic with Milenium Actress? It mostly looks like some people are really trying to show off with all the animation titles they know….

Hmm…I don't know, I still have a huge fondness for Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Yeah, I really liked that one too! Thanks for reminding me about it. I love animation and I watch a lot of it so I have a hard time picking a favorite, Mask of the Phantasm is at least in my top 5. American Pop was really good too. Sleeping Beauty is one of my all time favorites if for no other reason than the fight with the dragon. Milenium Actress was really amazing as well.

Sleeping Beauty is notable for Maleficent, a villainess that was awesome 38 years before FF7 required all cartoon villains to be sexier than the hero (and to transform into something huge for the boss battle).

I thought the Cowboy Bebop movie was as good as the TV series. It'd be nice if there were more original anime movies not based on an already existing anime, manga, or video game.

totally agree. I tend to not want to watch movies based on series…even though the ones I have seen have been pretty decent.

One major gripe though I wish the maturity of themes and storylines of anime would transport to american amimated movies. The market is saturated in America with just this Disney, altough excellent animation, cutesy kids/family oriented shtuff. And most mature oriented animated movies tend to be more of the T@A and overly graphic nature, which doesn't have to be the case.

Well, technically they could be right. We're being asked what the best animated movie we ever watched is, so if somebody only ever watched The Black Cauldron and A Troll in Central Park, they'd be free to choose between those two turds and list one of them.

My favorite used to be Akira, but it recently was blown out of the water by Tekkonkinkreet. Hands down.

IMO, the single greatest animated movie yet to date.

We-ell… It isn't featurelength (it's only 25 minutes long), but I have to say Kakurenbo. While the level of detail and smoothness of animation in Miyazaki-movies is astounding, and I have many Disney movies that are dear to my heart, Kakurenbo blows them all out of the water. In my opinion, of course.

A mixture of 2D and 3D animation, Kakurenbo is 25 minutes of fear, with one of the most bone-chilling endings I have ever seen in an animated movie.
The Continued Misadventures of Bonebird - a poor bird's quest for the ever-elusive and delicious apples.
