closing your eyes doesn't make the world go away.

But it does do a damn fine job of demonstrating what is real.

If it's real, you can trip over it. If it's imaginary, you cant.

I've never tripped over any of that stuff. Therefore, it is not real.

Ever trip over oxygen, ants, fire, or noise? (Or aliens?)

I myself, am a realist…..
If I can not see it, smell it, taste it, talk to it, touch it, or fathom it, I do not belive it/in it.
Not that I would not like to belive in it…. just need proof. But the aliens and ghosts, I can fathom, easier than gods and devils….

What if you are terrified because something really weird, something that is inexplicable but very threatening, just happened and you feel that you are in real danger? Does this even momentarily affect your belief percentages in any of the categories?

I know that in the past, whenever I have been so scared that my knees turned to jelly my belief in things that go bump in the night grew to some extent.

While I don't quite agree with the old saw that, “There are no atheists in fox holes,” there is a certain element of truth in that when your back is to the wall and you don't know if you are going to survive a certain situation, your belief system can undergo very rapid revisal, even if only on a temporary basis.

I'm just saying . . .

I actually agree with this. I think that ‘traumas’ (Just calling them that for ease of use) can distort beliefs, even if it's for a few moments. Like Charley said, stuff has happened that has changed my views on stuff, some temporary, some permanently, but changed them none the less. So yeah, I do think some experiences can change your beliefs to some extent.

ALong those lines…
If you honestly believe you are going to die a very horrible death in the next few minutes your body is going to go through enormous stress as if it is really going to die.
In that context, perception creates reality to a degree.

The problem here is that once the existence of God or elves has been proved, you can't believe in it anymore. It's like believing in bricks, you can't, because it's obvious they exist.

Honestly, if someone pulled a gun on me I'd start praying immediately.
Hey buddy, you should be a Russian Cosmonaut, and here's why.

If someone pulled a gun on me, my first though would be ‘Wait, I didn’t go paintballing today…'

Then I'd join SC in the ‘OSHI-’

On second thought, I'd probably crap myself first. Then OH SHI- then praying.

Hmmmm, I don't think so. The attacker would've shot you in the face by this point.

Although it would be profit for him if he stole your wallet afterwards. . .

A tough one indeed.

Quite the conundrum, is it not?

It depends on how much cash you're carrying.
