Toddlers who dislike spicy food 'racist'

Big Brother says what you should like and what you shouldnt like. That includes the food you eat. Big Brother knows best.

You can't make this up…

Toddlers who turn their noses up at spicy food from overseas could be branded racists by a Government-sponsored agency.

The National Children's Bureau, which receives £12 million a year, mainly from Government funded organisations, has issued guidance to play leaders and nursery teachers advising them to be alert for racist incidents among youngsters in their care.

This could include a child of as young as three who says “yuk” in response to being served unfamiliar foreign food.

The guidance by the NCB is designed to draw attention to potentially-racist attitudes in youngsters from a young age.

It alerts playgroup leaders that even babies can not be ignored in the drive to root out prejudice as they can “recognise different people in their lives”.

The 366-page guide for staff in charge of pre-school children, called Young Children and Racial Justice, warns: “Racist incidents among children in early years settings tend to be around name-calling, casual thoughtless comments and peer group relationships.”

It advises nursery teachers to be on the alert for childish abuse such as: “blackie”, “Pakis”, “those people” or “they smell”.

The guide goes on to warn that children might also “react negatively to a culinary tradition other than their own by saying ‘yuk’”.

Staff are told: “No racist incident should be ignored. When there is a clear racist incident, it is necessary to be specific in condemning the action.”

Warning that failing to pick children up on their racist attitudes could instil prejudice, the NCB adds that if children “reveal negative attitudes, the lack of censure may indicate to the child that there is nothing unacceptable about such attitudes”.

Nurseries are encouraged to report as many incidents as possible to their local council. The guide added: “Some people think that if a large number of racist incidents are reported, this will reflect badly on the institution. In fact, the opposite is the case.”

NOW UPDATING!!!

No way. That's unbelievable! So if a kid happened to not like some foreign food, they're suddenly racist, even if they're too young to know it's from a culture other than their own?

Knowing Kyupol, his sources and these sorts of stupid story, this things is probably 99% taken out of context to sound as corrupt and nonsensical as possible.
—-

Going after young children is far too early for these “anti-racial” discrimination programs though. You should be more concerned when they're actually school age or even high school age.

That's the real issue here; that this program even exists for young kids at all. Not this rubbish about food.

i don't believe everything that I read…

Even if this is true, it's not going to do a lot. I doubt the source of racism is food or children for that matter.
A bunch of overworked nursery care providers aren't going to have the time to report “Billy doesn't like spicy food.”
No amount of budget is going to change that. Hypothetically, if they did manage to gather info from a few “reports”, I doubt anyone will have enough of a definite result to act on it.

Lies. Stupid ones.

I kind of don't believe this. Even if it is true, it's bloody stupid. Like mishi_hime said, the daycare workers have enough to do without having to report on the food preferences of every child they're watching.

Guess what? I don't like spicy food! At all! I'm pretty sure no one is going to hold that against me. It's a personal opinion that has nothing to do with racism.

On another note, Kyupol, I think that's enough with the “big brother” stuff. There are tons of other good books out there. I suggest you maybe pick up some of those so you can reference a variety of literature in your posts, and not just the one book.

The story has appeared in a couple of other places and has been repeated on US talk radio and quoted as coming from a British newspaper and then picked up by the wire services.

However, the best point is what if the child says “yuk” to a food from his own culture? Does that mean he/she is self-hating? :)

Also not everyone likes all types of food especially spicy food. My wife doesn't but that has nothing to do with how she feels about cultures that eat spicy foods! It has to do with her digestion and tastes. Spicy foods also don't like her.

Me neither. I can't even eat it. I had a nasty experience when I was a kid, eating too much chilli sauce on a kebab and I think I removed all spice tolerance in my body.

I'm now a racist, evidently.

I used to eat red chili pepper sauce out of a bottle, so I love spicy stuff. But I don't like curry… I'm racist.

Hey, what do you call those people that are offended by the stupidest things? Oh yeah, reverse-racists.

reverse-racists.
That term is… just silly.
Eating chilly that way will reduce the sensitivity of your taste buds. That's ok if you want to just eat things like chillie, but not good if you want to be a wine taster for example.
————–

-Actually its a physiological fact that all normal very young children find “spicy” food hard to get used to. They have a far more sensitive and active sense of taste than any adult. This is why they tend to like bland foods and sweet things.

It probably is about the food, you wouldn't understand that because you don't have to live here. The British are really, really weird about this, like when they tried to ban ‘black’ coffee, or when they replaced that kids song about the black sheep with a rainbow sheep.

Carries on like this, looking in the general direction of someone who seems a bit foreign will carry the death penalty.

No wonder my ancestors left for Jamestown 400 years ago. Indians and starvation or silly laws.

Then the USA had the War for Independance and not a moment too soon. :)

(Though my ancestors picked the wrong side, oops) ;)

But we Yanks still love you guys, you even paid your war debt from WWI.

Gotta agree with ozone on this one, though infants and toddlers have more sensitive taste buds. Remember bland food? When they get to pre-school then you assault them with spicy food.

Thermo-nuclear Buffalo wings from Cluck-U-chicken… banned in certain areas because they're too hot or the real General Tso's chicken. Another reason to drink Stout, though you have to feed babies ale or lager as stout is too heavy.

This is a lot like the worst blog topic. I mean because of the feminazi thing. Because no matter what, there's going to be a group of people that decide “it's okay to be different, because in the end we're all the same”, but at the same time they're going to act like those differences mean the world, and they're being “oppressed” by majorities. If everybody was the same, bigots would have nothing to complain about.

The ones who should be respected here are the children and their developing sense of taste. I'm certain there are plenty of Asian Indian children who exclaim “yuk” when first encountering curry and so forth.

It's not a question of culture when a child first encounters exotic tastes but biology. But of course you can't bring up science where race or culture is involved as the poor guy in Texas discovered when he used the term “black hole”

That guy was just as big an idiot. He wasn't using the term scientifically, he was using it as a metaphor, in a forum where “black” was already used as a metaphor, but in a different way.
