Yeah, the guy who started this thread called it right.

Hehe yep I've seen it happen before on other projects.

Glad they figured it out! ;)

Looks like we aren't entirely out of the woods yet: the six most recent “This just in” comics have the missing comic image problem right now. Example (my comic):

Yup, I've had people reporting this again. I'm not sure why it's happening again so quickly, I thought they freed up a lot of space. Then again people here do have a habit of uploading 2Mb comic pages (seriously)…

I've told Platinum the problem is back, but it's 2am there so likely it will be a few hours yet before they even know anything's wrong.

Sorry everyone. :[

I'm not sure if this is helpful or not, but the RSS Feeds seem to stop loading whenever uploads stop as well. If it's just that the image server is full would that still affect RSS feeds?

I can pass that on, but I might need a little more description. Do you mean that when you check your RSS reader, no drunkduck updates show up anymore?

Even if people are posting images that are too big, if the servers have filled up that quickly again, then Drunk Duck is gonna have a major problem going forward. I hope the space issues aren't what finally undoes DD by making it too costly an investment for Platinum.

I'm not really a fan of this suggestion, but Platinum could possibly delete accounts that haven't been accessed in over a year. The problem is that it would erase from the Internet some really good comics that have ended their runs.

This site is always broken. I have never seen this site completely functional. Other comic hosting sites have people uploading large comic pages too and this isn't happening to them. I left this site originally more than a year ago because of problems that won't go away, and I came back to give it another chance only to find that it's still happening.

To be fair, DD had a good run going there for quite some time. I started my current comic in early 2008 and it's only been in the last few months that there have been problems like this.

Yeah, the RSS reader shows up as RSS Feed not loaded, and the clicking on the RSS Suscribe button on any comic page just takes you to an non-functioning page reading, for example,
The Page
XML Parsing Error: no element found
Location: http://www.drunkduck.com/rss/rss.php?cid=549
Line Number 1, Column 1:
^
. This does only seem to happen whenever image uploads stop working so I can only assume it's related.

Still not working for me. Tried editing my latest page to fix the broken image, but that didn't work. I deleted and recreated the page, but that still didn't work.

I checked the edited and recreated page in separate browsers, so I don't think it was a browser caching issue.

Going through motions while I get my head straight.

All my comic pages are under 400k, and they're big 750x1125, full color. I use Irfanview to compress them (it works much better than Adobe products jpg compression).

That said, if a few dozen new uploads have already filled up the new hard drive space, it doesn't bode well for future uploads on the current system.

Could the store have gobbled up a lot of disk space? Maybe duplicating images to a new folder, thus doubling the disk usage? Just making wild guesses because that's how I roll… dude.

Am I the only one who thinks the problems here might have something to do with the fact that each comic and each page is just another page of the same domain where every other large site like deviantArt and Smack Jeeves use subdomains and they work fine?

I am still experiencing this problem; anyone else? I just uploaded two comics and when I hit the “View” button, nothing comes up. …If and when this gets fixed, do I need to re-upload those two comics, or will the original upload work?

The original uploads won't work, you'll have to reupload them.

Is this working for everyone now? What testing I can do shows that things are working again.

So, is the official word that it's working again? Or will I just be working hard, staying up all night again, only to find it doesn't work and see my rankings keep falling? A lot of people uploaded broken images just so they could get on the This Just In list, fully knowing they weren't really uploading anything… I didn't do that, it seemed like cheating. So, my rankings continue to fall #84 overall today.

FRUSTRATING! I'm beginning to wonder why I'm doing it at all… competing with a wonky server and cheaters.

Meh, still not working. @_@

I dunno, I kind of suggest that people put their pages in the author's comments like I've been doing until everything gets fixed. :/

No, it's not working yet. It seems to be an intermittent ongoing problem. The programmer has been talking to the server hosts about it- they tell him he has space, he tells them it's acting like it has no space. Meanwhile there are very short periods when an image might make it through. So somewhere there's a problem needing figured out, still.

Sorry guys. I know this is super-disruptive. :[

I'm sure your aware of it but I know of several strips that have threatened and one that has actually moved their strips to a new host. I think maybe some sort of statement or mass mailing from Platinum may be in order to calm the masses. The one that moved I know has over a thousand pages on DD and was here since before the crash. Kinda a shame to lose that kind of member. Hope this weekend is the end of the drama. I have pages to load!

Well so far that I've been here since '07, I think this is the first big crash that I encountered at DD.. I think we should all try and be patient enough to withstand this issue. It would be nice if it gets fixed before my next update is due though… ^^;

As far as the programmer can work out, we're being screwed by our server hosts. The guy is working extremely hard to get this fixed- over the weekend, everything.
He was meant to be finishing the store about now, but at the moment he has to work on both things at once. He's under a lot of pressure.

It's sad because none of it is the DD Admins' fault, it's probably not even Platinum's fault, but people shake the part of the tree they can reach, so you guys get the blame.

But those with hundreds of pages will weather the storm. My comic with just a dozen or so pages has been washed away, depending on fast updates to keep readers… I was as high as #72 overall, and rising 5-10 places with each update, I haven't seen today's rankings, but I'm sure I'm now out of the top 100 (I was #94 yesterday). It's not just that we can't update, but it takes all the enthusiasm out of you… why should I stay up 24 hours straight coloring a page, when it might be a week before anyone sees it? I just won't do it anymore… I'll update when I can, but the thrill is gone.

But then again, where else are you gonna get 1200+ pageviews a day after having a comic online for just a few days? But these problems have just sucked all the joy out of creating for me.
