What anime are you worshipping now?

What anime are you currently kneeling at the alter of?

Myself, I am holistically into Beck right now. First of all, you'd think an anime about an all-boy band would be some overly-feminine J-Pop ensemble. Instead, it's a totally Americanized rock band. They're into Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Stones, The Beatles, The Ramones. Hot shit! That's awesome! Plus, the storytelling is well paced and the characters are very believable.

Bleach is pretty good too. It isn't just some Buffy meets Yu Yu Hakusho ripoff.

Um…not much really. The only animation I've really been immersing myself into lately is the Batman Animated series and whatever animated movies of them I can get my hands on. We have been watching GTO in anime club, and it's pretty good. Also Full Metal Alchemist is something I keep meaning to watch parts of…

Hrrmm, can't go so far as ‘kneeling at the alter of’ O_o
… buuut the last decent anime series I've watched recently was Samurai Champloo. I really enjoyed the idea of spinning a hip hop theme around an anime otherwise set in a more ‘traditional’ Japan (the Edo period I think). Totally unexpected events, like an episode involving these samurai characters playing baseball against American sailors, were cool touches to the series.

I tend not to worship things, but Full Metal Alchemist is really good right now.

So is Bleach, which I totally didn't suspect.

I think it was Serial experiments. That was a good one. Theme-wise it was very much the same as Neon Geneses, but without the superficial giant robo religious pap. Higher consciousness and all that.

I want me a Navi!
Did the same guys do Blood the last Vampire? It looked very much the same style…

Ghost in the Shell Second Gig was good. I like Ah My Goddess, it's stupid, but I like it. And I'll always go back to Robotech. So those are my recent ones.

Nope. Character designs were handled by Abe Yoshitoshi who also designed characters and story elements for NieA _7, Haibane Renmei, and Texhnolyze. All four series were handled by different animation studios, none of them Production IG (the studio responsible for Blood the Last Vampire and Blood+). The character designer for Blood the Last Vampire was Terada Katsuya, who I am not too familiar with. Blood+ has character designs provided by Hashii Chizu. Personally, I found the Blood movie and TV series to be more generic visually, although Yoshitoshi's style doesn't translate well to anime. Generally his artwork has a dirtier and more urban feel to it, but the animes based on his designs tend to smooth out the rough edges and flaten everything.

I've had some difficulty getting hooked on stuff recently. There are shows I watch, mostly fansubs, but I generally just watch stuff that's more mindless fun and less art. I'm finding a lot of the genres I used to like in the past are becoming more generic as shows move to cable and some of the genres I couldn never get into in the past, like shoujo anime, are becoming more innovative.

It was a nice refreshing original story. It doesn't hurt if you played Skies Of Arcadia before that though.

It sorta reminded me of Sky's of Arcadia, but it was better. The characters were the best part of it. I've yet to see an anime that can create characters that good.

The ending had both strong and weak parts to it, but all in all it was an incredible series.

I'm still waiting for someone to pick up the Dirty Pair 80s TV series. That was the best of all the DP stuff animated.

You mean like ADV? As far as I know, it's been out for a while now. I've seen box sets at Best Buy.

You might be thinking of the two-disc box set of the “Original” Dirty Pair OAV series, which was actually produced much later (as in, after Dirty Pair Flash). It's the original Dirty Pair style, but the ten episodes within are not from the original 80s TV series.

Figures. ADV loves to mislabel things. I just figured since they were picking up City Hunter and Nadia around the same time, they would have been on a classic kick. I believe they have the rights to the original TV series, but never released it for some reason.

Although you are mistaken about one thing. Flash is the only recent OAV series (as in it was made in '94). The 10 episode OAV series (12 if you count the longer OAVs that were released here as “movies”) that ADV released as Original Diry Pair was made between the years 1985 and 1990 with the majority (9) coming out in 1988. ADV released it later because the rights were tied up by Streamline at the time.

Dirty Pair first showed up in a cameo in the Crusher Joe movie. They then got their own 26-episode TV series. That was followed by the first OVA one-shot: Affair On Nolandia, the movie: Project Eden, the 10-episode OVA series(out here titled Original Dirty Pair), and then the second OVA one-shot: Flight 005 Conspiracy. Following that about 4 years later was the first of three Dirty Pair Flash OVA series. Pretty much everything of DP animated is available now through ADV Films except for the original TV series. The Crusher Joe movie along with the 2-episode OVA series is available through Animeigo.

Furi Kuri (at least that's the Japanese spelling, don't know about the American bastardized spelling) is the series you are thinking of.

That's Fooly Cooly, or FLCL. That's a 6-episode OVA series from Gainax, the same stoners who gave us Neon Genesis Evangelion. It's on DVD now in America through Synch Point.

Too bad the whole thing got shipped back to Japan in the hopes that someone out here would buy the rights to the live-action series(AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!). That and they never did season 5 or the two mini-movies.

I just like it so much, and I never get tired of him slamming to the floor whenever Kegome says “sit”
