What are friends for?

What does it mean when someone adds you as a friend? Is there a practical side (as far as rating or somesuch)? Are you expected to add them as a friend as well?

Just curious,

You can add them as a friend too, if you want. Also, there are two friends tropies. “100 friends” and “1000 friends”. And no, having friends doesn't improve your rating.

If someone adds you as a friend, that means they like your comics alot, and your personality on DD.

And as for the “Adding them if they add you” thing, some kind of take as rude if you don't.

I generally only add folks if I enjoy their comics. I'm not trying to grab up as many fiends as possible. That's what MySpace is for!

I wish I could make myself un-friendable, or they need my consent to be my friend. Sometimes I feel like I'm being used just to get that shiny trophy with the hundreds of paper men stuck together. I know I'm not as popular as people are leading me to believe. @_@

I've only added one person to my friends list before they added me, and I asked first. Other than that, I add anyone who adds me, unless when I check their profile, they have 500+ friends, then I know they just added me for the trophy.

Then compared to you I am immensely rude and antisocial. I only add those whom I actually know (by this I mean we have sent each other quite a few letters and/or keep commenting on each other's comics so much that we practically have a conversation there). And just like Puff, I wish I could make myself unfriendable. Lots of people I've never even heard of add me at random. This annoys me to no end.

Keep smilin', keep shinin'
Knowin' you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for…

:)

I like people! Why be able to add friends and not add them? On a site like this you can just ADD PEOPLE and talk to them! Why not? Shrug…MINGLE! HAVE FUN! TALKS TO PEOPLE! :)

Yes, no doubt, that's what friends are for. Except on such a site those people one randomly adds as friends aren't “on your side forever more” and one cannot even really count on them for sure. There should be some distinction between “friends” and “agreeable acquaintances”. I myself have a grand total of one friend. And that's enough for me. And I also have quite a few good acquaintances, like the “friends” on this site - but those aren't to be mistaken for “knowin' you can always count on me, for sure” type friends.

I wish I could just add people as agreeable acquaintances instead.

I'm like you, FT. I really should add those people who are kind enough to patronize my books, but other than that, it really strikes me as odd when people I do not know suddenly add me as a friend.

Thanks for all the great input,

Hey by the way Chip…I added you as a friend because I like your comic.
I thought by extending that request one could start a dialogue from one artist to another.
That's how I see it.
If someone sends me a friend request and I am my response is, “Who the heck are you?”…I check them out in the forum and their work and from there I make a decision to add them or not.
No loss, no foul.
You don't want to miss out on new peeps to roll with!

I add them for a reason. Or if they add me.
I also try to check their comic and comment on it in their profile but I am a bit behind on that at the moment.

“I get by with a little help from my friends.”

Actually, if someone adds me (and I'm actually smart enough to remember to log on and check it out) I think it's very nice. It means that they looked at my stuff or something I said, and thought enough of it to take the time to click that friend thing. So what the hey. You can never have too many friends, can ya? So I always click them back. It's a partly a courtesy thing, but really just kind of fun. I have seen some cool things that way, too. I guess its a form of networking. Maybe ‘friend’ is symantically to strong a word. Maybe ‘acquaintance until I know you better’ would be more apropo. hee hee hee!

Anyhoo. Like the voting system here at DD, the friends thing doenst really MEAN anything, but I figure, who am I to turn down a warm fuzzy, even if it's just a bit of artifice. In the real world, warm fuzzies barely exist, so in the DD I will take them all.

^_^
