What are your Top 5 Favorite Animes if you had to rank them (which you do)

DBZ as a whole had some really terrible music, I thought. But the opening theme did rock. Gundamn Wing had a pretty good OST, but I couldnt stand the actual show. I'm a bastard who hates Gundam in general, excluding 8th MS Team and Stardust Memory which just own own own (the battle theme when the 8th MS Team takes on the ace pilot near the end of the series, in the city, is brilliant).

Also I need to revise my previous list to includ Lupin the Third as number one. For some reason I totally forgot about it. I mean if you want to base an anime off it's opening theme just look at this:

Oh absolutely. Lupin III is definitely a really close #6 on my list. Loved that show.

3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Pet Shop of Horrors
5. FAKE (It's a manga. Does that count?)

Which one?

You worried me there for a moment when you said 8th was the only good one. I personally think Stardust Memory has the better mech designs and I love how the ending isn't your typical “good guy wins” ending.

I mean if you want to base an anime off it's opening theme just look at this:

They had a remix of that song in one of the Japanese DDR games. It made its way to arcades in the US, but unfortunately never made its way into any of the American console versions. It wasn't a hard song, but kind of had a fun pattern, plus it's Lupin. They also had the first OP from Rurouni Kenshin in one of the games. Stupid Konami, taking out good music andreplacing it with garbage like Brittany Spears. Now that I think about it, rating OPs could make for an interesting topic. I saw some people doing that on youtube, but they all had terrible taste.

The opening theme to the American version. Its corny as all hell but I cant help but love it.

As for Stardust, I really dont remember it too well, but I recall liking it, just not as much as I liked 8th MS Team. Tried to go back and watch Wing again and man that has not aged well for me. : \

5 - Trigun (this series is a little misleading, at first it's all happy go lucky and halfway through it does a complete 180)

4 - Detroit Metal City (if you like metal and comedy, is there a anime for you)

3 - FLCL (a show you have to see multiple times to completely understand, awesome experimental anime)

2 - Last Exile (what can I say I like air battles)

1 - Now and Then Here and There (like Trigun, the anime starts very happy go lucky, but gets REALLY serious quickly. Excellent anime.)

1. Afro Samurai
2. Afro Samurai
3. Afro Samurai
4. Afro Samurai
5. Afro Samurai

Dammit, you stole the words right outta my mouth! *shakes fist*

Anyway, Afro IS awesome, but here's my list:

5. Voltron! Only kidding…Heat Guy J (I just love the whole ‘futuristic buddy-cop’ idea :P)
4. FMA
3. The Guyver
2. Bleach (I'm surprised no one's mentioned this before - reasons…?)
1. Naruto

Close runners-up: Dragonball (Haven't really watched enough to list it up there), Gantz (yes, me loves teh ultra-violence. Hence the Guyver), Deathnote, Trigun, Cowboy Beebop and GITS (not really fussed which, I liked it in general) and Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X (one of those animes that does a bit of a 180 - there wasn't much in the first season to suggest the direction it would take from there on…).
Retake - What happens when a movie star goes from portraying a hero on the silverscreen to becoming one in real-life? Nothing good…

A few years ago that list would have been a little different…

1. Cowboy Bebop
2. FLCL
3. Naruto
4. Bleach
5. Ranma 1/2
God needed the Devil, the Beatles needed the Rolling Stones, Hakoshen needs me.

I have a definite top two. I buy every DVD I can get my hands on.

1. Detective Conan
2. Lupin III

These I've seen a couple times but really I guess there might be others that I'm more into. I'm just naming them off the top of my head.

3. Cowboy Bebop
4. Get Backers
5. Samurai Champloo

If we can count movies instead of series, then Nausicaa, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away would blow these three out of the water. – But I'd drop all of them for the Detective Conan movies.

Oooh, have you seen the latest one, it looks super intense! Anyway, I agree with you, Miyazakis movies are awesome, but I think I prefer his other ones: Laputa (the first movie I've ever owned), Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service were my childhood favorites!

Also, for movies I recommend “Toki O Kakeru Shojo.” I randomly caught it on TV the other day and ended up crying for 2 hours after, really beautiful anime!

Or Castle of Cagliostro. ;) Miyazaki + Lupin – A little more happy/whimsical than typical Lupin movies, but fun anyway.

I just received the subtitled DVD of the latest Conan movie. I'm saving it for a rainy day. ^_^ Last year's movie was a little disappointing though. Not enough action.

Anything that's not Naruto or shojo, I love. For my number one I say Dojin Work. I love the comedy. Number two to the end (they don't have an order) are Ranma 1/2, Half Prince, Kamen Teacher, and Akima.

Shaman King.

That's it. I don't much care for anime, but that show just makes me a happy little camper.

I used to like Bleach, but then it just turned into DBZ and I got tired of it.

3 Scryd
4 Dragon Ball Z
5 Wolfs Rain

I haven't seen many comics let alone anything contemporary. But I think my list is still pretty solid!

Bleach (I'm surprised no one's mentioned this before - reasons…?)
When something is extremely popular people who are very uncool feel like they aren't complete homosexuals by hating it but it only makes them lamer… It's a viscious cycle.

Or it could just be that some people don't base heir top 5 on which shows got more viewers. A show can have wide appeal. but still not be considered the best. How many people on these boards do you think would rank American Idol as one of their top five TV shows?

To be fair I guess the anime is pretty terrible if you consider the fillers…. I personally would consider the manga to be one of my favs tho.

That goes over 9000 (obviously) for Drag-on Ball Z. That had a wide following, but that's mainly because it appealed to certain people when they were kids.

Going by the “loved it because I watched it as a kid” criteria I'd have to say:
Astro Boy.
Robotech.
Star Blazers.
Battle of the Plannets/G-Force, or whatever the title was at the time.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz… or Kimba the White Lion.

…I can't decide. :{

Two lists…

List of older stuff that I saw up to 2002 (in my “analog” era when all I could see had to be somewhere on tv or vhs)

5. Tosho Daimos
My first giant robot anime and one I want to see again (without terrible italian dubbing with polish overdub/lector slapped on top of that, ugh. At least they kept the theme song! opening here). I mean, what's not to love about a giant robot that uses karate to fight alien invaders? Oh, and it's also a tragic love story :D
4. The Enemy is the Pirates!
I remember catching that on tv, not knowing it'll be only six episodes. Man, was I pissed when I turned it on to see the 7th ep only to find Transformers instead! Ugh, can't watch Transformers cartoons since then, haha. opening here.
3. neon genesis evangelion
I almost went with Nadia the Secret of Blue Water here as it was basically done by the same team (and you can see a lot of later themes from Nadia popping up in NGE) but I think I like NGE a little bit more, so here it goes.
2. bubblegum crisis
Possibly the best cyberpunk series. Never bothered with the sequels/remakes though.
1. Macross: Do You Remember Love
I remember catching this on some german tv channel, in original Japanese with German subs. Loved almost every minute of it :D
Also, this is the only adaptation on my list, that is in a way it adapts the tv series (and within the world of Macross it's viewed as we view movies that are based on true events, and obviously changes the story to fit into the movie format).

Now, the “more recent” list.

5. planetes
Ok, only manga adaptation on this list. Generally these are either fine or really bad or start great but then go into some awful ending cobbled together (think Claymore, ugh, way to butcher the series), but this one works smoothly from episode 1 to the very end. And it's a quite fresh concept too.
4. code geass
It may not be perfect, but it kept me on the edge of my seat through almost all episodes. Liked the ending and loved some of the robots too :D
3. ghost in the shell: stand alone complex
But only the first series as it really well balanced the slower bits and action scenes, whereas second gig lacked action most of the time. Much closer to what the original manga was and thus much more interesting than the movie OR the second manga.
2. furi kuri
Pure fun, it's also making fun of Evangelion too if you look closely :D
1. hellsing ova
The tv series were fine, except for the fact that they have BUTCHERED the story (nothing new, heh). As such, this OVA is much better animated, sticks to the story, doesn't drag it out endlessly and keeps the original voice acting.

…if I sat down and thought about it for another hour or five, I could probably make a totally different list, but this is what comes to my mind right now. There are things missing like Akira (which I really like, but it's a pale shadow of the manga, which I'd love to get an hellsing-like treatment, that is a 6 ep OVA going scene by scene) and others that I've simply forgotten.
