I have been starting up a comic, and I'm not sure if I should make the speech bubbles by hand, or if I should simply use a program to make them. Saying I do go with using computer speech bubbles, which program should I use?
Sometimes I like to go to the attic and gaze at the stars, wondering what the heck happened to the roof.

Check out Internet Memes! It is kinda funny, and that counts for something…right?

It depends on the medium and style of your comic. If you have a loose, sketchy style, hand drawn bubbles will probably look best. If you don't have a steady hand, try buying some sort of template from an art shop to help you out a bit.

If you want a cleaner look, the way to do them in Photoshop is to make a new layer in between the art and your text and use the shape and/or path tools to draw ovals with triangular tails, then use the layer blending options to add a black ‘stroke’ at whatever size looks good. I suspect most photoshop-like programs (like GIMP etc) will allow you to do similar stuff)
Manga Studio has automatic speech-bubble tools, but note that the debut version doesn't include this before the latest (Debut 4).

Hm. That clarifies a few things for me. Thanks! Hopefully this info will make my comic better.

For your comics farcical and internet memes, handdrawn bubbles are definitely the best match. Computer made bubbles would interfere with the drawing style.

Computer made bubbles look best on very clean drawn comics or on computer rendered 3D comics.

(my opinion)

I tried the computer bubbles route… and I HATED it! Now I do all bubbles by hand… I like the ‘purposely odd-shaped’ bubbles ^_^

I don't use speech bubbles for thoughts but I do use different font
