On Monday 25th of September 2006, roughly around 3:15pm AEST, my friend Jason went to pick up his girlfriend Christine from her school. When he arrived at the highschool, she immediately got into the car and they drove off to celebrate two years together. However, the celebrations were cut short. A girl from Christine's school had been asked to leave for the rest of the term (This Wednesday) and had driven to the school to pick up her younger sister. The girl was driving while intoxicated.

Her car slammed into Jason's at 120km/h (At least 50km/h over the limit for school zones). Her car then spun into a telephone pole, causing it to snap in half and fall on her. She died almost instantly. Meanwhile, Jason and Christine went into the back of another car containing a seven-month pregnant mother and her two year old child. Both survived but the mother got whiplash

Jason and Christine were admitted to hospital shortly after being cleared of the wreckage. Jason has had 23 stitches in his leg, 12 in his arm and it is unsure if he will be able to use his lower body again. Christine has a fractured skull, arms and two cracked ribs. Both of them have yet to awaken from the accident

My point? These were my really good friends and now their lives may have to be compromised because of one idiot's bender (She'd had her liscence revoked three weeks earlier for the same sort of thing. She registered pretty high on the breathalyser when the cops got her for a random breath test)

Also, every month both schools show videos of horrific car crashes (Or drug abuse or some variant), what happens to the victims and such. Most of the kids have gotten the message and she was the only one to ever be caught doing the opposite of what the videos try to teach

The parents don't care about what their daughter has done to others. Yes, I do realise losing a child can be horrible, but threatening to sue the people in the other car even though at least 50 witnesses state otherwise and accusing every one else of not caring is going too far. No one would have wished death upon that girl had she lived, but it is a good notice to future generations.

Fuck alchohol and people stupid enough to drink it and then get into a vehicle which has the potency of a murder weapon.

It's not alcohol as much as stupid people. Sensible people can drink alcohol and be responsible about it. Not enough people realize the responsibility they have to other drivers when they are behind the wheel of a dangerous machine.

There needs to be stiffer penalties for drunk drivers. House arrest, mandatory counciling, and mandatory re-testing for the first offense. Jail-time and permanent license suspension for secondaries.

I am sorry about your freids, Aussie. I hope they will heal and live normal lives again. That really stinks. :?

I suspect the parents are just hurting. It's sometimes hard to accept that your own child not only made a mistake and lost their life but also damaged the lives of others.

I'm sorry to hear about your friends and I hope they have a speedy recovery. :( It's really terribly unfortunate and it totally sucks.

It scares me to pieces when my friends tell me they've driven drunk before. They tell me they're okay but I always worry. Too many people think that they're just buzzed or they totally know what they're doing but really, out of all the people who suffer fatal accidents when driving drunk, which one of them did it knowing that they will crash and die? They probably all thought they were fine and well enough to drive.

My father died from an alcohol overdose on September 10 (two weeks ago), I remember telling him not to drink, and well, he didn't listen and now he's gone.

I miss the man, but it was his fault. Even he admitted it.

Shit, man…I don't know what to say, I'm really close to the friends I have and…damn…If that ever happened and then the drunk driver's parent's SUED my friends I would be so freakin' mad…I agree with Spang, it's more stupid people and apparently the gov't won't let us get rid of them the clean and efficient way, so we're kinda stuck with a bunch of ‘tards.
Honestly it’s refreshing to hear the drunk one paid the price, I'm tired of people surviving three crashes where they killed innocent people, and then finally the big guys decide they are a hazard.

I really hope your friends are okay…well as Okay as you can be after getting in a crash

Thanks for the condolences guys. They've cleared that Jason will walk and their injuries should be healed after a while. Unfortuately, they still haven't woken up.

Oh, and the girl's funeral is going to be Sunday. I'm still conflicted on whether I should go or not (We did go to the same primary school, but that's the only reason I know her. We never really spoke to each other and such)

I am so sorry about your friends. When I was a child my grandmother's car got hit by a drunk driver while I was inside. I was fine but my grandmother was rushed to the hospital (she is fine now just can't walk right) and I was escorted to my friend's where we were headed by the police. I understand completly and I say again I am sorry. I hope your friend will get better soon and all will be well in the end. So sorry for the loss of the other. And if nothing else I say go to the funeral to show support for those who are hurting.

Big news!!! They're awake!

Yesterday was my last day of high school, so today I went into the hospital in the morning just to change the flowers and deliver a few greating cards from their classmates. A minute before I was going to leave, I heard a groan. Jason was awake. Twenty minutes later, Christine woke up too

There's some damage that's now apparent. Christine's throat got done badly so it hurts too much for her to talk. Jason goes into these huge coughing fits because of some damage to his chest, but the doctors say they should be fine.

Of course, they need to have some adjustments made when they sit their HSC exam in October, but there isn't any permanent brain damage so they'll be fine (Actually, I think Jason's gotten a little smarter)

And the family decided it's just going to be a private funeral, immediate family and a few friends, so I won't be going

I can sort of relate to your situation though. A few years ago my friend was struck by a truck while she was on her bicycle going to work.
The worst part about it is that he wasn't even drunk. He was just a speeding freak who didn't know how to drive.

I've thought of this for quite some time. Which is worse? Losing someone to impaired driving or just dumb driving?

Her death his many very very hard because she was a beautiful woman who lived every day with a zest for life that few had.

I'm glad they're well AK, I for one don't belive in tollerance for drunk drivers. That's just pure disregard for life there.

But studies have shown that people using cell phones while driving have even less focus than someone that is drunk. Do you hold the same distain for people using cell phones while driving? I know I do. Because it's the same type of selfish, bad decision that's made.

Alcohol consumption should not the issue here, even though it is a terrible, vile, thing to do when driving. This is about people not being responsible for their actions, or not understanding their decisions.


As a side note, I'm really glad they woke up! Here's to a quick recovery! :D

I don't care if you get drunk, but if you get drunk and start driving, you're a fucking moron.

They seem to be fine now (Well, as fine as you could be)

Jason's not going to be able to use his legs for a little while and Christine won't be able to talk for some time as well, plus they're going to have stitches in them for a little while.

I let them borrow my Gamecube and they keep slamming each other in SSBM or MK:DD. They let the kids from the children's ward come in and have a go as well. This is a good thing, as they've always been good kids, so at least the accident didn't make them jaded or grouches.
