OK, since moderators don't show up next to their forums in the list any more, here's a list of who's in charge of what forums. :)

There are a couple of new people, and some of the old moderators aren't on there anymore. Basically there were some people who just hadn't been around for ages and we felt better giving moderator duties to people who were around more frequently. :)

How does one BECOME a mod? Is there a secret initiation or suck-up script we need to rehearse?

The animation section strikes my own appeal. I know I can really contribute to that. Just offering.

Just hang around, be active and take part in things, help when you can help, be nice. Don't backseat mod and don't shitpost.

Wait why am I a mod again?

Lol.

Trying to be helpful is in my nature as a professional illustrator and drawing instructor anyhow. Won't be hard for me. I'm doing what I can already in here to participate and help our regularly.

Most of our mods got picked as people that struck us as particularly nice, active, and helpful, and were able to fill a need we had at that time. :) (In a couple of the forums we've had a vote who the forum members want for a mod.) Usually we don't pick a new mod unless someone steps down or says they'd like help with one of their forums, and in that case, that mod gets first pick about who they'd like to have take over/help. We don't ask too much of the mods other than moving the occasional thread and stopping fights and not being a jerk, so it isn't really a difficult job for most people… just make sure they come every couple of days and participate positively. :)

well…you don't really have to be a MOD to participate in areas you have expertise on. Mostly what a MOD does is keep peace between users. IF there is a problem with other users, just PM one us.

I don't think you need to be a mod to ask people to calm down or whatnot… I think that things are a bit more equal here than at some other forums. We like when anyone contributes and/or behaves like a normal person :)

You can still keep the peace whether you have the “Moderator” nametag attached under you or not.

Just updating to say that I've added Eggbert as a moderator to the Animation, Movies, Music, etc forum… he was one of the moderators on the old forum and it looks like I neglected to re-add him after the forums had their upgrade. :)

stuff

There's a big difference between reinstating a moderator who I'd neglected to add after the forums went through a software change, and adding someone completely new. :)

One more edit to the list, subcultured and Terminal are having ozoneocean help them a bit in General.

Please, let's not get into any I-want-to-be-a-moderator discussions. :) This isn't anything personal, it's just how we know things run best at DD.

To be absolutely blunt, we don't add moderators just because they ask (and I've had a few people PQing me lately to tell me that they'd like to be moderators too, so this message applies to a lot of people.) It seems too much like territory-grabbing, and the implication is that the current moderators aren't good enough or can't handle the work. There are better ways for a person to prove themselves as a forum “authority” than being a moderator. Someone doesn't have to be a moderator to be helpful or contribute positively - in fact, their being a strong community member is a requirement BEFORE they can become a mod. In every forum there are several users who show themselves to be helpful, contributive, and diplomatic - but we only need one or two mods for management issues. When the need for a new mod comes up, it's obvious to us who the new moderator should be because of the way they've stood out from the others over time.

Drunk Duck is very heavily a community-oriented site. All of our moderators are users who have been around for a year or more (in some cases since the very beginning of the site). Why? They have built up their own reputation and gotten other users to respect and trust them. They've also proved their wisdom and diplomacy when dealing with other users. We don't make people moderators who we don't know very well, so this pretty much excludes everyone who hasn't been around very long. We need to be able to trust them with the authority and functions they're being given and know that, not only are they going to be able to make useful/informative contributions to that forum, but that other users trust and respect them too. Making someone who hasn't been around very long a moderator will only generate hostility. Take all the hubub recently about the PS admins. They aren't even site admins, but the idea that these strangers COULD have any power over users or site functions makes longtime DDers upset.

So please, for everyone who has asked me if they could be a moderator, don't take my refusal personally. :) I don't want to alienate the old moderators, nor do I want to risk a huge mess with any other DD users. I don't doubt the helpfulness or expertise of anyone who's volunteered themselves, but in many cases I just don't know you very well (or at all really). As an admin I have to make sure that my decisions will benefit DD, and giving a virtual stranger power over other users isn't a decision that's okay with me.

As a reminder to everyone, you don't need to be a moderator to be helpful, contributive, insightful, or diplomatic. You don't need to be a mod to break up a fight or be seen as useful. Many, many people on this forum are all of these things and most of them are happy without being a mod. You don't need to have administrative authority to be a member to respect. :)

And I think we have more than enough moderators as it is so the forums are well-taken care of, IMO

So if were helpful community members we have the POSSIBILITY to become mods….**Takes in deep breathe** Dang my quest to become a mod keeps getting farther and farther from my grasp.
Comicmasta, there's no real benefits to being a mod. The March of a Million Steps (Through Lava, and Possibly Spikes) required for initation pretty much negates all the good stuff. Trust me.

I agree. The mods here aren't a bunch of overpowered dicks like the mods on other forums (Newgrounds, Gamefaqs, etc…), so there is no reason to actually try to get modship. The only advantage I could see is access to the mod forums, which is probably filled with boring things anyway.

I do, but only at the Drawer.

Outside that, it's boring like being a regular user. Expect that you can edit, delete and modify posts.

Problem with some people on the internet is that they get too caught up with the forum thing. It becomes all about the forum posts, or all about authority. I know over on the Megatokyo forums people gain respect through number of posts, which is just damn stupid.

And yeah, there really isn't much to the mod forum. (cept we plot tricks for the Top Draw in it…or at least Terminal does…)

Wait, they PAY you guys?!?!

What? Pay? I gotta get in on this.

I feel so empty without that little green square and the inflated sense of esteem. Now I have an Eminem song stuck in my brain.
