This year marks the 12th Year Anniversary of Drunk Duck, and many original Ducks are hitting the 10th year anniversary mark for their comic. I always think that the early days were before my time so I used the Wayback Machine to see what I missed ten years ago. It turns out that I actually used to read comics on here when it was fused with BuzzComix in 2004! I also learned that there are many users with popular comics still on the site today, updating the original comic or starting new ventures.

Do you remember the old Drunk Duck? Were you there during the first Big Crash? Well since this is a landmark year, I will announce Special 10 Year Anniversary Milestones with a custom banner in future newsposts for any comics that have stayed with DrunkDuck/TheDuckWebcomics through thick and thin, in sickness and in health for the last ten years. Just send me a PQ and I will make an AMAZING shoutout for your comic's tenth anniversary!

NETWORKING & COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Do you have a comic character that fits the profile of a 20-something college student, a police officer, or a first responder? Well usedbooks is looking for permission to use your characters for crowd scenes. Volunteer ASAP because she will begin drawing cameos this week.

DRUNK DUCK AWARDS
The 2013 Awards have all been announced and are still wrapping up this week with extras and behind the scenes art. Niccea is still accepting submissions until Friday, January 24.

El Cid writes:

The Extras are basically just silly sketches we throw in along with the rest of the awards show to keep things fun. It can be anything, really: Fan art, a short comic strip, a little mini story, a concession speech, fake advertisements, conspiracy theories, gossip, you name it. As long as it's not something mean about other DD people. I've always felt like the extras and behind-the-scenes are the best part of the awards, but we never seem to get very many submissions.

If you can come up with anything, just go ahead and send it in to Niccea before the deadline.

Just saw this post. MAN have I been hanging around here a long time. It brings a tear to my eye to see my old series "Kota's World" as the number one book back then. :) I don't know if that's because I miss being there or because the series wasn't that good! Still, I'm proud to still be here.

since in inception; so many comics began, so many ended, some merely stopped, their stories forever lost in time.

I've been here with one comic or another since 2003. Now in the process of re-building and updating the UNA Frontiers archive here after its stint at the late, lamented Graphic Smash. I've been hosted other places, but no other has a community quite like DD.

Yeah, me too, Tanman. But it was the only webcomic host where I posted comic pages that actually had people reading and commenting. Haha SLK8ne, I was talking about the 2005 one. Crashes and DD go together like earthquakes and Los Angeles. There is always the possibility that the Big One is going to happen, but it does not stop anyone from living there. And wow, Amelius! Thanks for that comment, you and Charby the Vampirate are the closest things to a DrunkDuck celebrity, so an announcement for your ten year anniversary is absolutely newsworthy. And yes, NightGig and all that jazz, I once referenced NightGig in a college paper.

According to some Wayback sleuthing, and I'm basing this solely on the first comics to be created on the site, some time in either early December or late November 2002 is DD's birthday! (the earliest record being December 3 for the creation of "Nerdsandsuch") Drunkduck main page '02 screeny: http://wayback.archive.org/web/20021120085823/http://drunkduck.com/ I just had my 10th anniversary on Jan. 6! I was gonna ask for an announcement, but then I chickened out because I didn't think anyone here would care. („Ó﹏Ò„) I remember the 05 crash, I lost nearly every single page of my comic because I was working with a dinosaur computer that I had to save stuff on floppy disks just so I could use photoshop! But thankfully two readers were lifesavers who'd saved exactly one half of my archives each.\(๑◕∇◕๑)/ I posted my comic pages in my offsite forum until DD returned, keeping an eye on NightGig and other places that Volte and Ronson posted for any hint of news of the site's return!

Which big crash? LOL

i joined right when platinum bought the site, great times

I noticed the Wayback Machine went back to 2002 (but no actual pages showed up), and there were some entries in 2003 when DD was the first Google result for "webcomic host site" but there seemed to be an exponential growth in membership in 2004.

Ozoneocean at 6:20AM, Jan. 20, 2014

Yeah, It started in some form in maybe 2002 maybe I think? I first joined in 2003 but didn't post Pinky TA till 2004. Glorious time! I think there was a bug in late 2003 that deleted all non-"platinum" comics from the site! Platinum back then was the paid membership option that stopped comics from being deleted after a few months with no update and also gave some extra features, this bug made the system think that none of the non-plat comics had updated for ages so auto-deleted them! Tragedy... :)

Huh... I thought the Duck was older than 2004. Not sure what link I had followed that originally brought me here then. IIRC when I first came here comics that wanted to be a part had to be approved first. Later when trying to decide what host to go with I asked Kate Ashwin of Darken for a comparison of Drunk Duck & Keenspace and the Duck sounded better to me. Been here since October 11, 2004 and they haven't found a way to get rid of me yet. ;-) Remember the crash of 2005, also remember Volte being so upset that he wasn't going to revive the site. Fortunately he changed his mind and a new version of the Duck was up in January 2006. Remember people going crazy when they found out Platinum had bought the site, people screaming that the sky was going to fall and Platinum would "steal our comics" and webcomics "spokespeople" (who probably never even heard of Drunk Duck before the announcement) offering their "august wisdom" on what it all meant. ;-)
