First of all - I'm going to be taking about three weeks off so that I can finish my course work for this year. (Anyone want to write a historiography paper for me? Please? No? Okay.) It would be great to have some guest newsposts to fill my Friday newspost slot during this time! If you're interested, please comment here or send a message to myself or kawaiidaigakusei.
You can continue to send me news while I'm away as I'll still be checking my messages, but it might make more sense to send it straight to kawaii.
Anyways, irrevenant had suggested under my last newspost that it might be fun to do monthly themed art competitions, which I think is a great idea! My idea for how that would work is that I would announce the theme around the beginning of the month, and then everyone would have until the end of the month to send me their entries. I would then put up all the entries in a newspost and announce the next month's topic.
The main thing I'm unsure about is what I could offer as prizes to the winners. A comic plug? A fancy banner/trophy? A piece of fan art?
I kind of like the idea of having a different trophy each time that winners can put in their profiles/signatures, but I'm not sure if that's a terrible prize.
And would you like to see winners determined through anonymous polls, or just chosen by me? I'm leaning towards a poll as I don't want to be responsible for any hurt feelings, but I can see how that might become a popularity contest.
Please let me know your thoughts!

I think this could be really cool - have a theme set up, and then have the characters in our various comics have to interact with that theme. There's a lot of room there to have fun, both comedically and contemplatively.

@KimLuster: Marlon Brando is a great example! I have to identify three different contexts in which historians talk about the subject I've chosen. So a historian who wrote about Brando would be good for a section on masculinity through film/media. I'm definitely going to look at masculinity in the context of labour, but I'm having a hard time narrowing down my other choices.

@Gunwallace: it's historiography rather than history, so it's all secondary sources - monographs, edited collections, academic articles. The idea is to investigate changes/trends in how the topic has been approached by historians within a 15-20 year period, and how the sources used are in dialogue with one another. 1990 is just a vague guess at this point - my exact date range might change depending on the sources I decide to use.

I did an Honours paper on the History of the Body many years ago. Are you limiting yourself to primary material in one medium? Magazines, Posters, Film, or even Comics? Or is this more a secondary sources paper? From 1990 onwards won't see much change.

As far as fairness for choosing winners, maybe take the top five from a poll and have you and kawaii pick the best from there; maybe have some guest judges at your side. idk if that's too much work, but it offers all fairness possible. Prizes as comic plugs may not be the best option. For instance if someone from the top ten were to win they aren't in need of comic plugs (unless they have lesser known projects they'd like people to check out, but even their side projects get decent attention). Anyone who wins will be in the spotlight for a few days anyway, so hopefully they'll receive a bit of traffic. Fan art is a well rounded option. You could even centralize it by making a comic dedicated for all of the contest winners and the resulting fan pieces. See if guest judges will contribute so all the work isn't all on your shoulders. There's a ton of options to smooth out this awesome idea (=
