Tomorrow is the first day of school in my district and in honor of this occasion, I would like to talk about a topic that is very pertinent to the younger generation and that is: Internet Celebrity.

In the last ten years, being famous on the Internet has skyrocketed to the point that a YouTube vlogger such as DanTDM, odd1sout, Jaiden Animation, SkyDoesMinecraft, and LDShadowLady to name a few, with a young gaming fan base and a whole lot of subscribers has the potential to be more famous with ten-year-olds than Hollywood celebrities. In example, a few weeks ago, I was talking to a group of kids when I brought up Tom Cruise and was met with blank stares and the question, “Who is Tom Cruise?” I followed it with, “Are you kidding? You have never heard of Tom Cruise? How about Brad Pitt?” Their response was equally shocking, “Who is Brad Pitt?” I guess the celebrities that I believed were household names are lesser known by anyone born after 2005.

There is instant gratification that comes with the ability to connect to an audience through comments. I have heard some kids talk about becoming a video blogger with the main goal of achieving online fame.

I'll admit that as a millennial (and an older kid at heart), I have also hopped on board the bandwagon and I am a fan of many individuals with a degree of Internet Celebrity. It might be the ease of access or the direct line of communication in the comments section to the original creator. I think I am wise enough to know that YouTube vloggers are everyday people like you and me, but I still feel over the moon whenever I get a notification that my favorite vloggers have responded to a comment I had written.
