This time out I wanted to talk about superhero comics again and turn the spotlight onto the one that was responsible for me discovering Drunkduck in the first place…Dasien.

Over the years the comic has become slightly entwined with my own comic, but always they have remained the own entities, so I hope that this doesn't come across as a self promotion thing. Although it will happen! In 2007 when i started releasing Energize on then Drunkduck, it was because i had discovered and was reading the archive of Dasien. It was and still is a real character driven superhero comic that is never short on action but always putting the development of it's cast ahead of “cheap action”. If there is one thing that you can praise this comic for, it is that Neilsama (the creator), really seems to care about his characters and the enjoyment of his readers.

One of the things that he does is to diligently work to maintain the continuity of his character and her world. Dasien has had many appearance in other comics, most notably CrossoverLord and CrossoverKill, and Neilsama always makes sure to be clear exactly where that event occurs in the timeline of his comic. If something significant happens outside of Dasiens comic, you know he will work to reflect it's impact at some point. True world building.

The reason I feel I wanted to draw attention to his work, besides being a fan of the comic, (brace for self promotion) is because he has taken it upon himself to re-master and generally tidy up all the pages from my original run of Energize. And this is exactly for the reasons mentioned above. Energize and Dasien had one story together where we teamed them up, but made the choice to not do the usual fight and become friends thing, but instead establish that they already know each other well. He has spent time correcting typos and such, that I even couldn't get round to, and it was my comic!!

What's more, i had another comic called Fearless, which i had to abandon because i simply ran out of time. It may never happen, but Neil is working behind the scenes on trying to complete the comic in some fashion, even if it is not as originally intended. Again…off his own back, to better cement the continuity of Dasien and Energize.

Later this month, although it will probably push to next month, he is planning a big update that plans to deal with Dasien's handling of the death of Energize. Now there have been a couple of articles about retcons in comics and how generally they do not work, and i commented that they can work given the circumstances. I think if you check out what is coming, Neilsama is about to retcon the backstory of Energize and Dasien and it will be a true demonstration of how a well written retcon can work.

The comic has been on the Duck for years and even though he has his own site with exclusive content, he always seems to support this site and it's community, so hats off.

Now the blatant plug - Dasien will have a small cameo in Energize: Black in the coming pages and there will be some exclusive pages of Energize: Black on the Dasien website.
