Bill Paxton, 1955-2017

Bill Paxton was a regular presence in my prime movie-loving years. As the punk in The Terminator, the Marine having a meltdown in Aliens (“no way, mian!”), and the nasty older brother in Weird Science, he could be tough, scary, AND funny. He was always memorable, even in small roles.

He played maybe my favorite vampire ever on film, or at least tied with Bela Lugosi. It was in the movie Near Dark, and Paxton played an animalistic redneck bloodsucker (best thing in the movie. very scary).

I'm also a huge fan of Frailty, which he directed and starred in. It's a tense, tense, Hitchcockian gothic horror/thriller that's worth a look.

So many of his characters were wacky, yet very human and believable at the same time. He will be greatly missed!

When I first heard about his death, it was like a punch to the gut. I was in shock and disbelief. I was hoping it was a hoax at first. The first movie I remember seeing him in was Near Dark. He was my favorite part of the film. I must have rented the VHS so many times that I should have just bought the movie. ;D (I gobbled up every vampire film I could find when I was growing up, and this one was one of my favorites.) Weird Science was another film of his I watched over and over, and my brother and I would quote Chet's lines all the time. It's been almost a week and the news of his death is still hard to believe.

Why does it always have to be the best that have to go first? :( RIP, Bill Paxton.

I liked him too, and I didn't like it when he played second fiddle to Kevin Costner (he loses to Kev in The Postman, and is clearly the lesser in The Hatfields and McCoys)

Always something a bit awkward and dry about him... maybe it was his voice, his popping eyes, his hard features... I'm not sure.
