One that note, that's exactly why emo has been labeled as a group of whiny ass pussies and punk has been labeled anti-establishment skater pussies (it's died down a lot though, but in the nineties..."punk" was "real big"...give me a fucking break). I blame MTV, I really do.
It's sad though, The real "emos" are already 30. Although really, I don't think it had too much of a fanbase that was strictly emo. Rites of spring was very big on the underground, especially the hardcore scene. A few bands from the true 80s emo inspired these faggot ass bands that claim to be emo...and I guess they are, but c'mon...they're about as emo as blink-182 is punk.
