Episode 276 - Time management, Deadlines and Organisation

For Quackcast 276 we had a discussion about the topics of time management, organisation and deadlines- all things essential to the practitioners of webcomics, and even more-so to people involved in webcomic collaborations! This is tricky stuff to handle, you have to balance your webcomicing with your other life activities as well as audience expectation for updates! And as you go on it gets harder and harder to stick with self imposed deadlines, so how do you combat that? Well one way is to make a Patreon account so people will put money towards you updating, That can make an excellent incentive to stick to a deadline, when there's money involved! Collaborations can be easy or hard to keep alive, as long as everyone is equally eager to take part and everyone wants it to succeed then you're good, if not then your group project needs a good leader: not someone who WANTS to be a leader, rather someone who's dedicated to getting the project DONE and needs to be the leader to make that happened, sort of like my role at Drunk Duck. They need to be willing and able to coordinate people and tell them what to do, handle their strengths and weaknesses right to get the work done. The last part to remember is contingencies for when things go wrong! What are your safeguards? i.e. buffers, finishing early so you've got extra time to work on the project if it needs it, have backup people lined up to do work for you, filler art at the ready, guest strips, maybe even simplified techniques or just posting line art instead. How do YOU stick to deadlines (if you do), how do you handle time management and organisation with your comics and collaborators? Gunwallace's theme music this week was Z74's Star Knights. Episode 201 - The Improvisationcast

Pitface joins the duo of Banes and Ozoneocean once again, this time for the Improvisationcast! Pitface and Tantz Aerine do a lot of writing together when they work jointly on their script for Brave Resistance, but in order to further exercise their creative and collaborative muscles they also practise a turn by turn writing style where they improvise a story as they go. They start off with their own comic characters, one writes an intro and a bit with their character and the next one carries on after with their own character and also weaving the first person's character into the story with them, and so on. In the end you can produce a startling organic story that has forced you to examine the way your character would react to totally unfamiliar situations and stimuli. In this Quackcast we all experiment with this by doing an improvised play with characters we make up on the spot, to very mixed results....

In this Quackcast Banes and I come back to our series on real world comic collaboration. If you've been listening a while you may recall that he and I decided to start up a comic together between the two of us. We talked about the process of getting that started. Here we revisit the idea and talk about how we're going with it so far... have there been any arguments? Any flakeouts? Disasters? Can Banes get his soufflé to rise juuuuust right? Will Ozone fail in his first catwalk runway show? The viewers must know! A collaborative comedy comic is a hard road when you're starting from scratch and we give you a real world view on how we two are doing with it. Note: Quackcasts will take a break over Christmas and New Year and will be back on the 8th of January!

They say a long journey begins with a single step... Banes and I are undertaking just such a journey, undertaking a collaborative comic between the two of us! In this Quackcast we finally try and put all the theory into practise, remembering what we have learned from all our many previous Quackcasts on the subject of collaboration and attempting to find what out of all that is most useful to us in our stab at doing a collaborative web-comic.We undertook this Quackcast with no plan or structure, so please forgive us if it was a bit ropey, it was really just an attempt to document the beginning of our collaboration. Today we have an interview With the widely acknowledged writer extraordinaire, scriptwriter for the 2012 DD radio play and author of the fantastic Character Development: Gunwallace. We learn many things from him, including some of the secrets of his extraordinary writing skill, his indefatigable collaboration techniques, the fact that he worked with one of the later artists of Tank Girl series back in the 90s, and that he's in the far land of the hobbits, clouds, Maoris, and even further in the future than ozoneocean: New Zealand!
