Episode 68 - Save the Cat for the Screenwriting

Mar 12, 2012

This marks the beginning of our story writing month! We're focusing exclusively and intensively on the art of writing, following on naturally from Kroatz's clever take on the concept of the monomyth. Bane's special interest and expertise is in scriptwriting, particularly movie screenwriting, so this is the approach we're taking. Screenwriting translates perfectly to comics even more than it does to novel writing or play-writing so hopefully this should come in handy to our webcomicing writers out there! First up we begin with an outline of general story structure, then move on to an explanation of some of the different TYPES of story.

HAHAHA...sorry. I can save you some time...just watch the first one. It rocks! Or...below the...rocks, anyway...

Dammit Banes! NOW I have to go rewatch the Tremors series!

For sure...it covers a lot of the same territory, especially in the 'story structure' part. And maybe without the powerful resonance of the Hero's Journey. I actually hadn't really thought of the Monomyth in many years - didn't know you were doing that before we started putting this one together. Is this the "1979 King Kong" of Quackcasts? If so, next week will be the "Dunston Checks In" of Quackcasts. Heh.

It's interesting, I never heard an eleven year old girl talk about that heavy a subject. :P There is a LOT if common ground between this QC and the last one, it gave me a lot of new ways to look at the Monomyth, which is good. It's almost like these kill the cat (I do not like cats) theories are a remake of an old movie, with better special effects but some of the scenes just do not have "It". Both are just as good, they're just meant for different audiences.

that's so weird; I wanted to do a Quackcast about cookies and ozone wouldn't approve it!

Ozoneocean at 7:53AM, March 13, 2012
