Bear: I read an article last year that similarly in the Lake District, so many wealthy people have been buying second homes there purely as holiday retreats and investments that the young people who have grown up there and still work in the local shops and cafes are having to live outside the area and bus into work as they can't earn enough to be able to even rent there. That just seems so wrong.

IN some places, like rural Wales and Cornwall, the locals object to "city slickers" with plenty of money, buying up local cottages or small parcels of land and building, since this drives up prices, due to supply and demand and then they, or their kids cannot afford to buy a place of their own. So it's pretty understandable.

Totally understand that whole 'anti-townie' thing (well, not _really_ understand it, as to me that is just silly), it all comes down to the 'us versus them' or 'outsiders can't be trusted', but sometimes someone is there for 50 plus years and _still_ considered an 'outsider'

DV: Haha I love that. As for the 'townie' stuff though, I have seen this before in rural areas and even among small businesses where a newcomer comes along and upsets the small close knit community that's been stable for long time. My uncle lives in a fairly countrified area and has always been really sensitive about it for some reason. I once heard a 'townie' telling him they had a poor meal in a restauraunt in his area and he took it very personally and replied, 'well WE don't want you!' He then went on to say he had a meal in town a while back and that, 'was crap!' He also resents people who have a lot more money than him and his standard response is that they must be selling drugs. lol

Something seems _very_ 'off' about the father, least of all repeating how the 'locals' resent 'townies'. They have been there only for twenty years, but believe they know more than people who have been there for decades longer? ... Kim it's possible that he extended that offer to Laura, but Laura politely declined, and now Laura is buried under the new tennis court
