SS6 16 The Curse of Carlingford 3
skyangel on Feb. 11, 2017
The story so far:
Since moving into the family home of her girlfriend Lucy, Sarah is convinced the house is haunted. At first she assumed it was Lucy's previous partner who died there in mysterious circumstances but now she is not so sure! An old couple who live nearby are telling Sarah about the strange legend that surrounds the house..
***NEW COMIC***
I caught sight of Poe's face on the update board a couple of weeks ago and was intrigued enough to find out what the comic was like, so I looked in again during the week and found it to be a really classy comic which aims to retell several gothic classics in comic strip form. It's pretty new to the Duck at least and still on it's very first story so it seemed worth sharing as I'm sure anyone who loves the current ‘Lenore’storyline will also really enjoy this. The art is very high quality and beautiful to look at and the writing is so minimal that although the occasional French word is used it doesn't stop you from being able to follow or enjoy the pace of the first story, ‘The Spider’ which is so damn creepy and intriguing, I just love it!
Mr Valdemar and other Gothic Tales
Have a good week! :)

Yup: typical response to the Unknown: kill it and burn it

There's a wee bit more to this as you'll see from the next page, but in general that's exactly right.

So so true :(
KimLuster at 7:04AM, Feb. 13, 2017
Well, this certainly doesn't look good... Even expecting something like this, still very sad! Once again, the detail and coloring is out-of-this-world!! Esp. that 4th panel (echoing Tommym)!! I wouldn't mind living in a wagon like that. Reminiscent of a phase going on in the U.S. right now, where some people have taken to living in extremely small houses! I have a friend right now building one he plans to have on a trailer he can pull around...!!

We only just watched a documentary film on 'small living' on Netflix last night. It's fascinating to see what you can do with such a small space and also how easy it can be to declutterand still live comfortably! I think it's a great idea and it really should get more government support, but as always it seems they don't like people dropping out of a system that suits them best! There was a tragic story in the news recently of homeless people in CA being given small affordable homes by a caring section of the community, only for the government to step in and crush them all, saying they were illegal! What Fallopian say about adding wheels now makes sense. It's something they mentioned doing in the docu which was never explained.

My brother got around needing housing permits by building several sheds connected by a deck. One shed is the bedroom, one the bath, one the kitchen, etc. it's really cute, like a little village! They are considering the wheeled one also.
KimLuster at 6:37AM, Feb. 14, 2017
That's my friend's thinking ;)
fallopiancrusader at 6:08PM, Feb. 13, 2017
Many municipalities have ordinances that forbid people from building extremely small houses on their property. People in the tiny house movement get around this law by building their tiny houses on wheels, so that it then becomes classified as a trailer. That has the added advantage of making moving very easy :D

So I never heard the expression "sky west and crooked" and on investigating I came across a British film of that name from 1966, directed by John Mills and starring his daughter Hayley. It may be coincidence, but the film contains themes that are familiar to Simply Sarah readers: prejudice toward those who are "different"; how hatred and violence can erupt from supposedly normal, respectable people; neglectful parenting; the oppressed finding acceptance and solidarity with other oppressed. And I too have enjoyed Valdemar thus far - very spooky.

Ah yea, this intrigued me too. The saying is sooo old that I couldn't even find a decent interpretation of it online! I'd seen the film as a child so naturally it came to mind again while writing this scene as it dealt with prejudice against Gypsies. I've never used the expression myself but it's such an imaginative one that I wanted to help keep it alive a bit longer. From what I can gather it means 'not quite right in the head,' or mentally deficient in some way.

Dear Sky, Great coloring and details as in fourth panel. From what Raven says in second panel, I get that she is a real Witch. This makes me happy:) I always wanted a Witch to grab me up and make me her second, or something like that. I hope she can use her powers to ward of the Lynch Mob. If not I hope she escapes intact. Checked out Valdemar, that maid seems both funny and mean at the same time. tommym
skyangel at 3:07AM, Feb. 18, 2017
Haha I'm glad it makes you happy hon :) I wasn't really sure if I wanted to make her a witch or just someone with a very unusual gift so I've tried to be a bit vague about it. I love your fantasy though, it's very thought inspiring! And yea, the woman in that Spider story gives me the creeps!
BearinOz at 7:32PM, Feb. 11, 2017
She'd have been safer in Wales - apparently only TWO witches were ever killed in Wales, and they were hanged, not burned. Then again, there were probably so many there, they held the balance of power B-)
skyangel at 3:04AM, Feb. 18, 2017
I know! I was quite surprised to find so few were murdered and it seems that even though the self appointed Witch-Finder General (Matthew Hopkins) was very big in Essex he never visited Canewdon, which was renown for it's witchiness. But maybe you're right and he was scared of large gatherings! :) As for Valdemar comic, it felt worth doing as the Poe connection between our comics is so strong! :)
BearinOz at 8:07PM, Feb. 11, 2017
...thanx for the Valdemar heads-up, btw. It's good, eh?
Phantomduck at 6:55PM, Feb. 11, 2017
They might want to run.
skyangel at 2:55AM, Feb. 18, 2017
Yes, I would!
Infected Blood at 4:01PM, Feb. 11, 2017
Oh, no, Raven! Be careful! :(
skyangel at 2:55AM, Feb. 18, 2017
She's a tough bird! ;)
moizmad at 2:52PM, Feb. 11, 2017
Dear me, looks like not everyone enjoyed the show. Where's that bird when you need him?
skyangel at 2:54AM, Feb. 18, 2017
Haha He'll make a brief appearance on the next page. ;)
fallopiancrusader at 10:50AM, Feb. 11, 2017
Well, this doesn't bode well! It appears like they are about to have a run-in with the British equivalent of the Klan. I agree with your assessment of "Mr Valdemar!"
skyangel at 2:54AM, Feb. 18, 2017
Yea, prejudice is an ugly thing.
