SS6 35 Visiting Nikki
skyangel on June 25, 2017
It's nice to have Nikki back in the story again and I took the opportunity to add a few personal details too. For one, the painting behind Nikki in panel one is a copy of a cover I came across some years ago by an artist named Leyendecker which I felt was just perfect for Nikki's apartment.
Secondly the history and exposure of UK comics isn't sadly as widely celebrated as US comics are and the girls comics have generally had even
less of a mention until the last couple of years when people are starting to take more notice again. The books Nikki's looking at are annuals which UK comics would bring out every year as Christmas gifts, usually containing the most popular strips along with other extra stories and features too. As I always found single comics awkward to read and store as a collection I started just collecting the annuals instead, many of which inspired me to turn out the art I do today, so it felt nice to add them as a small tribute.:)
Next week: Nikki has some intriguing news for Sarah!
Have a nice week!

Sorry to be so late. This brings back memories from the 60's for me. I well remember the Annuals of the British comics we got here in NZ. As I (may) have commented before a long while ago, it was your capturing of that style of comic that first got me following this.

Really cute page! Nice seeing them catching up, still sort of think they'd have a better relationship or more healthy than Sarah and Lucy but...Of course it means Sarah would have to feel the same way, so...I feel bad for Lucy but even worse for Sarah stuck feeling second best. :(

Udyr: Thanks :) I feel for Sarah too as she's competing with a memory more than anything.

Yes, good to see Nikki again. How's her transistion coming along?
skyangel at 3:25PM, July 3, 2017
Slooooowly Mo, slowly. :)

Yeah, we got a few of those annuals over here, both the girl ones and the boys, still have most of them around (some in not so great condition, but considering they date back to the 70's and 80's, with maybe a couple from the 60's, it's a wonder they are still in _any_ condition)
skyangel at 3:25PM, July 3, 2017
DV: I'd love to see some of the US versions. I have seen a few for progs like Star Trek and Lost in Space, Bewitched etc. but I'm not sure if they were just UK versions. I only ever seem to hear about Marvel and DC comics too so it would be interesting to know what other choices there were. I recently bought a 1961 annual on Ebay that looks like it has never been read! I was amazed to think it could be in such perfect looking condition after so long.

"Intriguing news", eh? Wonder if it has anything to do with those rather prominent b**bies?
skyangel at 3:17PM, July 3, 2017
Fred: Haha No such luck! You'll know by the time you read this anyway as I'm very late responding to posts this week! :)

Yeah, good to see Nikki again - they really do have a special connection (which you've adeptly shown). I remember Sarah's reaction, though, and was a little surprised to see she'd 'saved' Nikki's comic!! Great stuff!!
DarkVisor at 12:19PM, June 25, 2017
The reaction was to Nikki putting it online without telling her, also, that was fairly new in their friendship

Celebrate comics and girls in comic and girls who do comics, wherever they are!
skyangel at 3:12PM, July 3, 2017
Hehe Yay to that!

Dear Sky, Great to see Nikki again. Guess the red annual is about girls, wish I had a copy:) Nice work of art that Flapper is. P.S. I got worried yesterday as I checked SS, I kept thinking that some day SS will come to an end. All those pages and panels do add up to a massive amount of work. Thank You so much Sky! tommym

Tommym: As I just said to Bear, the Girl annual was not all that exciting and mostly all written stories too. Sorry about the late update too, it was my own fault as I was working on the Saturday and didn't get time to do anything until I got home.
BearinOz at 5:04AM, June 25, 2017
"...doing that felt like a second life"- ah yes, I know that feeling B-) ...as an ex-pat, I recognise those annuals, in my case they would've been Eagle ones. I'm glad you put that painting up below, as it's barely noticeable in the panel. Art deco, of course, but there's a touch of Aubrey Beardsley about it too. I love the'retro'cover on the next page, btw
skyangel at 3:09PM, July 3, 2017
My mum used to get the Eagle comic as she found it more excting than Girl and I ahve to admit the Girl annuals were pretty boring but I do love that logo on the front cover! In fact most of the annuals in my collection have pretty dull insides but I love them mostly for the cover art.
