SS6 71 Sarah's Judgement
skyangel on March 17, 2018
There is a lovely article by Emma Clare on the community blog this week about burn-out among comic makers. It's very timely as well because although we all have our good and bad days, I've found that if I have a nice buffer of 3-4 pages it will pretty much carry me through it as I can rest for a week and then feel drawn back to it again.
Coming close to the end of a chapter has always been the worst time for me which is ironic really as you would think that to be so close to the finishing line would be motivating enough in itself! But personally I feel all the exciting stuff has been done and all that's left is the tidying up of loose ends and a rounding off. The first chapter was the easiest because I pretty much took the drama right up to the final page so that's what I decided to do again when writing the last and final chapter, I've kept some really nice stuff for the last minute which hopefully keeps you guys excited and in turn excites me, because being excited about comics is what motivates me most.
Soooo.. getting back to burn-out, I've decided I do need to take a break because there are a number of pages left to do concerning Sarah's future beyond Carlingford and despite this being the last chapter it seems more sensible to me now to round off six and tidy all this Lucy/Laura stuff up, take a break, and then come back renewed for the final push.
Getting back to this weeks page, I felt it was worth putting Sarah's perspective on the situation down on paper. I don't expect everyone to agree with it of course, this is just how I see it through Sarah's eyes, for the record. Next week Sarah packs to leave Carlingford and Ron makes one final request from her.
Have a nice week ;)

Dear Sky, "Lucy and Laura" carved into the tree. That will still be there after all the actors are long gone. tommym

Oh, and your author notes... that has hit me like a brick wall lately, so while I'm not taking a full break, I'm certainly slowing down!!
KimLuster at 7:02AM, March 20, 2018
I can understand LOTS of things people do... I can even understand why someone might murder someone... but we don't do it! If we believe in a world where right and wrong, good and evil, exists, then we have to believe we can always choose one over the other... I've tended to be very judgmental in RL towards people who do extremely heinous things (murder, rape, child molestation...) as I always believe we can choose otherwise (I don't buy lots of modern psychology...) So, Ron... I understand ya... but I don't forgive ya...!!

Kim: That pretty much sums up how I think Lucy will feel, and certainly Laura too!

NicandBen/DV: I'm not going to argue with you guys about who I feel is more to blame than the other, it's one of those things we all have to judge for ourselves. I've followed Rons actions and conversations very closely but not Helen's so I have made it harder for readers to judge Helen. One thing we will see though is the harm they did between them. :)
DarkVisor at 4:55AM, March 20, 2018
No, Helen is way worse, and the instigator behind Ron's actions (not saying Ronnie is free of blame, butt _Helen_ is the one behind it all, pushing and manipulating him)

I cannot imagine what it's like to be gearing up to end a 10+ year artistic project. A little emotional, I would guess. Looking forward to Sarah getting out of Carlingford - too creepy, isolated and prison-like (panel 3).

Fred: I really want the Carlingford Lucy/Laura story over with now because it's been a long story in itself. It's been nice to wrap up all the little questions that it took so long to answer. From here on though we do have a small bundle of romantic and happy pages to come so I'm looking forward to doing those. :)

Yeah, been suffering that way too. One of the reasons I do my stuff erratically, and will have future stuff done way before finishing a chapter
skyangel at 2:35AM, March 23, 2018
Bear: I have so much to catch up on your comic. One thing I will enjoy when this is over is having more time to support other comics again with comments etc.
moizmad at 2:24PM, March 18, 2018
Yeah but the Duck pays us all so much money it's all the incentive we need right?
moizmad at 1:51PM, March 17, 2018
I feel a sticky end coming for Ron, maybe an irate flock of crows?
skyangel at 2:36AM, March 23, 2018
Mo: Haha I think if we were all driven by money then the site would have closed years ago! :)

I can totally relate! I'm in that burnout mode myself, being at the very end of my own chapter... I'm guessing you're starting your break really soon, then? I enjoyed Sarah's analysis and I tend to agree with her, although I think that, all in all, Ron is a bad man, because I do believe he would do something like this again. I see his confession more as a way too placate her with the benefit of finding a sympathetic ear too his actions, and not as a form of regret.
skyangel at 2:33AM, March 23, 2018
IB: That's very sound reasoning. I like to think Ron's woken up, or soon will do, to the damage that's been done to his family. As you say though, if he's done it once then it does mean he's capable of doing it again.
DarkVisor at 8:14AM, March 17, 2018
Still not looking forward to the end of this, specially if it's a hung cliff, butt, will continue to enjoy it and hope you will continue with something else after :D
skyangel at 2:29AM, March 23, 2018
DV: Hi, No, there won't be any cliff hangers. I want to leave this whole thing tidy and all questions left answered by the last page.
