I've seen a few that did speech boxes. It depends on what kind of comic you're making. In this case, speech boxes would work better.

I'm doing speech bubbles, which is the norm for a sprite comic.

Do you plan to use speech bubbles or normal in-game messageboxes? If second, you should use also original game's font for better feel.
