This is the second of our filler pages this week, today highlighting some of the contributions of Xmung of MAGELLAN. Next week the story will resume, and late this week we'll show you the cover of the second chapter.
To see the huge montage/mural the Red Death did of about every webcomic superhero you can think of, either click on the “before” link or see it at the Red Death's comic, BAD GUY HIGH.
This one highlights some of Xmung's contributions. Syko Suki is one of the most popular members of the Doppelganger Gang, and when he first proposed her, she was all in pink. We thought that made her look a little too much like ANT's opponent, Pink Flash, who had been a lot in CROSSOVERLORD—so Xmung changed the color scheme from pink to green and purple, added a silver lock for reasons that will become apparent, and the Syko Suki we know, love, and cringe at –was born.
In the MAGELLAN strip, the Character Assassins proved to be one of Force Magellan's most persistent and fascinating foes, led by the Master Assassin, who was out to find his “creator” via mass murder, convinced he was just a character in a story, oddly enough. A fascinating cult, and for our story, Xmung added Esteban Frio, a member of the Doppelganger Gang, as one of the higher officials of the cult.
I have to admit I wasn't all that keen on changing the colour scheme when the guys suggested it, but even I had to admit there appeared to be a lot of similarity with Pink Flash... and the purple and green worked really well!
Wolfgang Kruger is definitely better. It sounds so evil, but maybe I say that from years of Hollywood painting Europeans as villains, coupled with the idea that Germans are crazy-efficient in military advancement, with a pinch of the fact that any name with "wolf" in it can sound so scary. Imagine if his name was Leslie Humperdink. No man would follow him then.
Of course, you could say his birth name is Brogan Matisse and that he legally changed it at some point. That way you keep both conceptualizations of the name. But no matter what, he was such an awesome character, and I can't wait to see when you use him next.
The Master Assassin was designed specifically for Crossoverkill - while the Character Assassins have been kicking around the Magellan universe for some time now, the Master Assassin is only a recent conceptual addition. The keen eyed reader will have noticed that the Master Assassin is named "Brogan Matisse" above but is called "Wolfgang Kruger" in the story itself - the drafts have obviously been superceded and are not canon. Between this draft and writing the Magellan intro I had totally forgot about his original moniker. You have to admit that Wolfgang Kruger is a better name anyway!
Not much to say about Suki - at this stage in the development she was only Suki Shimo... the "Syko" title came about a month or so later. Mainly because Al was so keen to have a code name for her ;-)
As for Esteban Frio, I had no idea at this stage of development that I was going to kill him off during the Magellan sequence. Readers of my comic would know though that sudden death is frequently a fate for some of Magellan's characters!

Always like seeing xmung's stuff. I forgot about the pink Suki. Also neat to see the breakdown of the Character Assassin's uniforms.

If they ever made a video game where you could play as Syko Suki, that pink colour scheme would be good for a 2P costume/pallette swap.

Stephen does a lot of really good work. His Magellan segment in this series was crazy. I love these designs.
