Prelude Page 3: Ashes to Ashes

I actually had two more pages of torture planned out, but I wanted to get on with it so I put him out of his misery. Maybe in the future I'll go back and and do those pages (cuz they're funny), but for now: R.I.P.
One thing I can't stand is main characters that are perfect, nigh-invincible, or can always dig down and find the next level of ultimate power. (Hey,look! I just discovered a cool new super ability that will help me win this! How convenient!) There are just so many levels of Super Saiyan or fox demons trapped in a moron's body that I'll buy. The idea of fighting unlimited power with yet more unlimited power seems to be a cop-out to me.
Anyway, an actual story should be making an appearance pretty soon, I hope.

Agreed. However, my pedant gene requires me to point out that it was ultimately Gollum's addiction to the ring that defeated Sauron. Granted, Frodo got the ring to where it had to be, but if Gollum hadn't been there too, Sauron would've won...

That did sound incredibly lame. I felt sorry for him until you mentioned half vampire. All half vampires must die! Or Un-die. Or whatever you have to do to them to make them go away and never come back!

Fenn, you are my new favorite person. I don't care what anyone says, Tremors is one of the best movies ever. From the standpoint of character development, Superman as a hero can't hold a candle to Lex Luthor as a villain. You can't relate to Superman, that's why you're always pissed when Superman wins. Batman, on the other hand, is more or less on equal footing with his villains. While you may admire the Joker as a character, you pull for Batman to win.

I like the way you think. I am sick of perfect heroes with limitless power. Where's the tension in that? That's why Batman will always be cooler than Superman. That's also why Tremors is one of my favorite movies... the villains weren't all-powerful, and the heroes weren't perfect. But the heroes that survived won the day with their wits.

You're absolutely right, MOC. Everyone forgets that Aladin defeated the djinn (in the classic tale, not the Disney one) by out-smarting him. Even in the Disney version Aladin beat Jafar with his wits. Frodo defeated Sauron because he was willing to sacrifice everything to do so, and he had friends that were willing to die for the sake of his mission. The very real possibility of failure is what makes the drama.

Couldn't agree more. Winning battles by finding out "hey, I'm stronger then that guy and just didn't know it" gets really old really fast, but some people don't know how to write a plot any differently. Winning a battle against a stronger opponent by out-thinking or out-maneuvering them makes for a much, much more interesting story.
