QUESTION QUESTION!
As you can see I' m not quuiiite satisfied with the font myself… thus trying out another one which isn' t much better in my opinion if not even worse… But the moment I find the correct combination of lettering and bubbling I' ll edit back all of the pages, promise. (By the way, until that happens, I will probably stick with the previous font; all the other fonts are even worse…)
Now, the question before I go raid Blambot: is there a font anyone would recommend? Or, should I use computer made fonts at all? Just like FAL recommended, the bubbles could/should be done by hand, and then they really would fit the page better… my problem is how to edit bubbles like that and that they would get in the way of drawing. (Past experiences, does anyone remember Malcontents written by Evil Emperor Nick? ;) ) And that led me to the conclusion that maybe I should use my own handwriting…
Well, not if there' s a fitting font.
The other question is: How do you get a hand-made balloon' s size right for the typed text? A definite yes if this problem is killed without the painful experience for months through which pages would have badly sized balloons… Though this would also probably mean that you will have to wait until I get the courage to touch the finished pages with an eraser.
Last question: what do you do to be able to use a font after you downloaded it?
Replies:
dragonrider: Holding vigil is effective. It scared away even the new computer. XD
wildcard: Thanks, every now and then there will be a watercoloured page too! ;)
Stig Hemmer: Well, Ren has a bit of his left ear sliced down for your satisfaction. ;P
Jallice: They' re kobolds. ^_^ Their ears and tail are supposed to be scaled, I have yet to find a nice technique for that…
chocolate_addict: Computer exchange hasn' t even began… though my brother who is going to get this computer has already started to install his programs. The little problem is, he installed them on my own harddrive…
DarkChibiShadow: And I can' t wait to draw even more! September starts next week though… *silent scream*
Sei: I haven' t even told anything about the World yet… ;P
Katch: Mmmmm, Berserk, yummm, and hehe, I couldn' t deny the influence even if I wanted to. ^_^
JeanSeishin: This page not so much, but I hope to get back on track with the next page. ^^;
Mummymetaller: I hope to make some similar pages soon!
TheMidge28: What exactly is spacing on the text? Sorry, English is my third language at best, so I wasn' t sure if you meant the font style' s spacing or the placing of the bubbles, or the placing of the text inside the bubbles? ^_^() And thanks for helping!
harryq: You' re one to talk! ;P I hope it will develop with a correct texting technique.
Luminous: Ollie and Ren' s designs are at least 3 years old. ^_^
BlkKnight: Thanks!
FAL: If anything then I' m grateful for good critique! Thanks for the advices, I' ll try find a better solution. ^_^
e_kat86: I have no idea how many of them are but I greatly enjoy them commenting! ^_^ I hope your vacation was just like you wanted it to be!

e_kat86: Thank you, I was thinking that maybe I should choose a frog but in the end lizards are just as appetizing. >:-D Nick: I' ve never heard of Phantasy Star. o.O I' ll take a look at Oh My Goddess! I hope your teeth heal fast!*hugs* DarkChibiShadow: Yup she talked, but she still has to work on her speech. ;P FAL: Lizards are especially tasty with marmalade and a little pepper. ;P On the next pages I' ll try with hand-drawn bubbles and my handwriting too... Loud_G: At least she doesn' t have to eat it alive. ;P dragonrider: "Ooopsie" is yet to come. ;) harryq: I hope once I can upload pages again you will enjoy it even more. ^_^ Sei: I' m going to try my own bubbles and handwriting on the next few pages. And you' ll see, you' ll see about the languages. ;) I think a lizard can heal illnesses by making you feel so much worse that you won' t care about the original problem... :P Well, maybe not. TheMidge28: I hope the next pages will be correct lettering-wise, but please tell me if they are once they can go up. Thank you so much! chocolate_addict: You' ll get to see my handwriting. ;) BlkKnight: Sort of. You' ll see soon. ;) JustNoPoint: Thank you very much, I got to the solution of printing comic pages of my favourite mangas and using that letter size. Very similar solution to yours, hehe. :D wildcard: Thanks, I especially love drawing faces. :D skoolmunkee: Thank you so much for your advice! Especially the ellipse one, I guess I' m not that bad at drawing them but if there' s trouble it will be easily fixed. Once I had to model a little pass - I' m an architecture student - that was shaped as a half of an ellipse. This had to be made of balsa wood. Oh, the pain, but it was done using a similar, printed method... Shewolf2: I' m sorry for this useless update ahead, but I hope I' ll make you even more jealous with those next pages. And awwwww, Ollie says thanks to you.
Shewolf2 at 5:59AM, Sept. 1, 2008
BTW, the female kobold looks sweet and teasing ^_^
Shewolf2 at 5:51AM, Sept. 1, 2008
Ai, I haven't been able to look at this for a while! Still amazing... Now I'm jealous (but in a good way).
skoolmunkee at 11:58AM, Aug. 31, 2008
You don't need to draw the balloons onto the art page in order to get hand-drawn balloons. All you need to do is print out the page once you've put the letters on, and use a lightbox or somesuch to draw the balloons on a new sheet. You can even do digital balloons of the right size to trace, if you can't do circular shapes very well. Then, scan that new sheet, and use photoshop or whatever to edit them in. That way you get the hand-drawn look without worrying about their being the wrong size, or feel like you're doing something to the page that you can't change. It's a bit more work, but much less prone to error.

The font seems okay to me, though perhaps a hand written one might compliment the style? Great stuff anyhow, the facial expressions are particularly good :)
JustNoPoint at 5:15AM, Aug. 30, 2008
I really like the last panel! ^^ One option, if you like, is to make a font based on your hand writing. Not too too hard to do. For your hand drawn word balloons you could perhaps scan your page in... add just the text where you would want it- then print that out "lightly" and draw the balloons around the words. Also, do not be afraid to cover your art with a balloon. I know I know how horrible it feels to do so, but a sacrifice must be made at times for the greater good of the page. Word balloon positioning is essential for story flow and reading experience. If it helps to guide the readers eyes, go ahead and cover part of the picture. Easier said than done for sure, I have trouble following my own advice :P
BlkKnight at 7:19AM, Aug. 29, 2008
I'm guessing there's a mild language barrier there?
chocolate_addict at 7:23AM, Aug. 28, 2008
I love this page :) and she finally spoke... and I love her expression in the last panel... as for the font... I don't really think you need to change it but if you feel like you do then go ahead I hope you find the 'perfect' font soon... I know that this isn't much help... I would also like to see your handwritting but if it's too hard for you to make the comic that way it's okay to stick with the computer font :)
TheMidge28 at 6:51AM, Aug. 28, 2008
lovely new page and love the expression. great job capturing the reaction and disgust in the last panel. on the last page when I said "spacing" I meant the the text and how they were spaced in the bubbles/balloons. I would recommend maybe typing the lines individual and move them closer together and then place them in the bubbles. I hope that makes sense. :) as per font choice, you don't want one to overwhelming or distracting, but you want one you enjoy as well. You'll find it eventually. :)
Sei at 6:41PM, Aug. 27, 2008
Oh... finding the correct font face is always tricky. I would really like to see your own handwriting in this, I think it'd add a more personal and authentic touch. PLUS you'd never see that in anyone else's comic xD. Sorry, I guess I'm not being much help here >_>;. There is a lot more happening in this page and dialog. Does that girl not speak English (or whatever tongue they speak) well? Lol, it's funny how they offer her lizard, I actually see dried lizard sold in Asian herbal stores. It makes me very curious as to how they taste- and how they're supposed to remedy illnesses ^^.
harryq at 5:23PM, Aug. 27, 2008
I really enjoy looking at this.
dragonrider at 4:59PM, Aug. 27, 2008
Ooopsie!!
Loud_G at 3:23PM, Aug. 27, 2008
Brilliant! I love her face in the last panel as she is confronted with fried lizard goodness. :D
FAL at 3:14PM, Aug. 27, 2008
Lovely faces! That lizard looks rather tasty... not, haha. I really like your crosshatching on the backgrounds, it gives it that extra quality. I would suggest flash or adobe illustrator to do the bubbles, if you use Photoshop you can paste them as smart objects. As for the font just download some from the internet and keep what looks best, just what I did. Notice how in comic fonts it's usually all capital letters.
DarkChibiShadow at 2:49PM, Aug. 27, 2008
Yeah September does start. :C Aw man, that lizard looks yummy...cause I always want to eat weird stuff like that. ^.^ She talked, yaaay~
Evil Emperor Nick at 1:53PM, Aug. 27, 2008
Something about the ears reminds me of Nei from Phantasy Star II. Of course I've just been playing Phantasy Star III so it might just be me. Lovely expressions but a little to much white space in the last two panels. Even vague shapes, tones or "shadows" fill space and make the lack of background less noticable. White space can get very attention getting unless you use non-standard panel lay outs and boarders. If you don't like background you should consider experimenting with page lay out to take the emphasis off the lack of them. I think Ah My Goddess would be a good refernce for how to get away with very minimal backgrounds and heavy focus on the characters and foreground successfully.
e_kat86 at 1:23PM, Aug. 27, 2008
Nice expression in the last panel; I think I'd react much the same way, lol.
