If Texas seceded, we would have the 10th largest economy of any sovereign nation. We could definitely manage; it's only a question of leadership. If the new nation were run by practical-minded resilient individuals -- in other words, by Texans -- it would do phenomenally well. But if the place were taken over by populists, socialists, demagogues from either side of the political fringe, then it would crater, as does every mismanaged nation state eventually.
