"The idiot box" is another term for TV's and they can stiffle creativity in the audiance.

"The scenic route." ;-) I suppose a number of things can be lumped under the terms Creative Block/Artist Block/Writer's Block. Years ago I read an article by an author who referred to it as a chasm because it was a lack of ideas that kept her from moving forward and she had to figure out a way to bridge the chasm. The story going in different directions might be your subconscious being bored with your planned plot. With me, I've just been having trouble getting my brain to focus on putting lines on paper, not a lack of ideas.
