Yep. As he's flying he's getting briefed on his controls. Seems easier than it looks since a lot of the functions are automated and such.

I'll probably explain this in an "Intermission" comic... the fighters are VERY EASY to fly. If you can play a First Person Shooter game, you can fly one of these things in any mode. However, in the year 3014 most people have forgotten about the control schemes used in games (if they use old computers to play them at all). :)
