As I said in the comic it's largely inspired by Robert Graves' White goddess.
My purpose was to write a fantasy story that was far from D&D, fantasy videogames and Tolkien.
I like D&D, fantasy videogames and Tolkien, but I believe that modern day fantasy is too much self referential.
In my opinion old sword and sorcery stuff like Conan was freshier because it was still inspired by either legends, miths, or historical records of roman or pre-roman times, so I tried to write something in this logic.
Actually Tolkien too was inspired mostly by mith and history, but he was so influential that today his own version of e.g. dwarves and/or elves became the "official" dwarves and elves, so that people cite Tolkien without even realizing.
