Reprisals on the population for anything the resistance did, and any violence towards the occupying troops, was a staple of nazi discipline. The ratio of how many civilians (or resistance, once they had caught some, or both) to each German dead or wounded varied according to the severity of what had been inflicted and how much the nazis felt they needed to terrorize.
Also, just to put a historic context marker to what Eichel is saying- El Alamein has NOT happened yet. ;)
Indeed, Greece's victory over Mussolini's fascist Italy (1940-41) was the official first victory against the Axis powers, and inspired courage and determination to the rest of the allies everywhere at the time.
Now you can win one over your friends in Trivial Pursuit. :P
kyupol: thank you! // Abt_Nihil: well, it isn't necessary that he gets killed this IS a depiction of what really did happen back then, and if you're familiar with the Merten case, you'll see being a big baddie in a comic I am making to show exactly the feel/conditions and circumstances of that era, is NOT a promise of an untimely end. ;)
Abt_Nihil: Ha ha! Well he was trying to avoid getting hit with an arrow, of the party discipline type. :P Also, why not? Many nazis died of old age, or got old enough to get cancer ;)
bravo1102: Of course not. As I understand it, they never acknowledged their defeat in Stalingrad when it happened either. // Pit-Face: Absolutely! // usedbooks: I didn't know you were of Italian descent! That's awesome!
And naturally any Axis defeat on the Russian Front doesn't count (the Moscow Offensive of winter 1941), nor does anything involving the navy (Graf Spee, Bismarck, Taranto) That's the SS mentality. Even though the Kreigsmarine (Navy) was arguably the most Nazified service.
The mention of Italy brought to mind Eddie Izzard's take on Italian fascism. So, although this is definitely NOT a smiley humorous page, that flash in my mind made me giggle. I'm so ashamed. -_- (And also a fair bit Italian in my heritage.)
