Didja notice? #99??? holy crap!
Bad news, the last of my submissions came back with that lovely rejection letter. King Features said no, after 6 months. The rejection letter was semi-personalized, with a line that says, “your works shows a good understanding of the comic strip art form, and I encourage you to keep at it.”.. but, yeah, that could be a line on every rejection letter I suppose. Blah… put a damper in my weekend, that's for sure.
I have a surprise for the #100 page, you'll have to come back Wednesday to see! (yeah, I have way more than 100 pages, really, but I don't count the contests/cameos/fan art/etc).

antcomics: I think it's all in the avatar... if your avatar is a dude, YOU are a dude. And I think a cartoonist may very well be presumed "male" until proven "female", LOL. thanks StewWriter! I try to bring the funny ;0)
antcomics at 11:45AM, Sept. 20, 2007
FTR, I knew right off that you were a chick. And don't worry. People think I'm a) a dude and b) British. B's not bad in any way, of course, but the fact that I put my name on every comic makes A very puzzling to me. Unless 'Amy' is a common dude name, which if it is, I am unaware that it could be a masculine name. LAWWL.

Hobos are funny! And, as you know, so is public urination!

coinilius at 7:00PM, Sept. 17, 2007
Sorry to hear about the rejection letter as well, keep submiting, though, you've got some great stuff here!
dantheman at 4:27PM, Sept. 17, 2007
Just remember you are one more "no" away from a "yes". I'm excited to see #100.

will do Tweebus!!! will do.
tweebus at 3:22PM, Sept. 17, 2007
Sorry to hear about the rejection letter. I heard a joke one time that a guy at a publication house who was doing a comic was affraid he was going to lose his job so he trashed all the great submissions and wrote the rejection letters himself. So keep sending them over & over until they finally get it. And get that you're serious and not going away!

Villamar: many, many thanks, new friend! I love GF as well, such a odd sense of humor, but I adore it! Glad to know someone out there realized I was a chick, LOL! (is it the avatar? Does it look like a dude?? hee hee) slimredninja: encouraging words buddy, thanks a lot! I should see if I can get published in small papers by myself...it's all about exposure, right?! I just need like 8 more hours in a day! *whew*
slimredninja at 1:39PM, Sept. 17, 2007
Your an amazing talent!! screw them just keep hustling and pushing your strip maybe resubmit it's not always going to be the same people looking at your stuff. Next time send them different strips. Maybe the run that gets you hired hasn't been ran yet. Offer your self out to lots of local papers all over the U.S and Canada. I do sales for a sports magazine and you have to be pushing your product full time. Even if were the only ones who ever follow you just do it because love us.

Just caught up with all the strips and let me tell you Z&F has made me laugh harder than most syndicated strips have. In fact I seldom read those anymore, save for a little of the Get Fuzzy, they're just not the same since Watterson left. And I never thought you were a dude, then again you could've been in the same boat as the guy from Johnny Cash's 'A boy named Sue', but I seriously doubted that. Anywho I want a Z&F button, I think you've got a cafepress site right? if so must check it out and consume! Keep it up Dawn and I'll keep reading.
dgriff13 at 12:33PM, Sept. 17, 2007
aww, Toonman.. sorry to hear you're in the same boat as me! We should make a "Screw-the-syndicates Club!" woooo! thanks for the 5, maninblack ;0)
reconjsh at 11:49AM, Sept. 17, 2007
gross.
ToonmanAZ at 9:57AM, Sept. 17, 2007
LOL! I'm lovin' the reaction in the last panel. I recently got a rejection letter from Universal Press and it only made me want to work harder... plus I'm totally gonna make fun of all the crap strips they chose over mine! Hey, you deal with it your way and I'll deal with it my way! LOL!
dgriff13 at 9:32AM, Sept. 17, 2007
aww, thanks for all the sympathetic comments, guys... cheered up my monday. Don't worry, I'll just get right back on the horse. My next submission will be in full color, with all the improvements I've made... it'll be way better than the first 50. so there! Plus, now I've learned that I have other opportunities here online- syndicates aren't my only hope! ha HA! antcomics: desparate for "woman comic-artists? really? I'll bet my concept isn't "feminine" enough for their tastes (ie: "cathy").. hell, a lot of people here at the duck still think I'm a dude. LOL brock: thanks for the input on this perticular comic, it's always good to know how my writing rates! I'm glowing ;0) Wish I could reply to everyone in length, but I'm putzing around at work.. so, thanks PR, Ersatz, NYjaplander, harryQ, heymelby & JZintel! Appreciate it!
Brock at 8:39AM, Sept. 17, 2007
Sorry to hear about King Features. It doesn't sound like they sent you a form letter, so take heart. This is one of my faves Z&F's so far. The storytelling is the clearest it's been and the characters aren't getting in the way of the background as much. Plus, the joke is solid. Keep up the great work, Dawn!
antcomics at 7:38AM, Sept. 17, 2007
Yuk! Sorry to hear that...I'd be too chicken to ever think of doing that though, so the fact that you tried makes you a better, stronger person than I! I keep hearing that they're 'desperate' for woman comic-artists...I wonder how true that really is?
JZintel at 7:11AM, Sept. 17, 2007
I like to think of rejection letters as badges, I hang all of mine on the wall. Worst I probably ever got was from Erik Larsen/Image Comics which just tore my stuff apart and ended with "it's not very professional looking". But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?
heymelby at 6:49AM, Sept. 17, 2007
Sorry bout the rejection, i had a bad week also, my strip went from #5 to 11 so i am bumed, but your strip made me laugh so thanks!
harryq at 3:49AM, Sept. 17, 2007
I was rejected by Humpty Dumpty. I don't know if that helps.
n_y_japlander at 11:34PM, Sept. 16, 2007
Sorry for your syndication loss... but I'm no friend of King... Keep pressing! their loss is someone else's major gain!!! Looking forward to the 100th!! (^o^)
Ersatz at 10:29PM, Sept. 16, 2007
Hehe! Look a their poor little faces! Sorry to hear about the rejection, but then Z&F has taken a few turns lately (different scenarios, colour and computer method), that may well help in the future. :) Can't wait for the centenary special!
Priest_Revan at 10:06PM, Sept. 16, 2007
Lol! Hobo.
