Andy Kaufman played this trope well in his standup.

@bravo - True! I remember when Dodgeball did an obvious ripoff of the Best in Show commentators with Gary Cole and Jason Bateman. Also very funny but so similar haha.

@EssayBee - Absolutely! That's a guy who was bad, but it's unclear if we were supposed to laugh. I felt like laughing at his cringe...but wouldn't want to be caught laughing at his 'material'... xD

Lt. Steven Hauk from Good Morning Vietnam is giving this article the side-eye.

There's also this guy... Doug Bell I think is his name. You probably never heard of him.

Another good one is the Family Guy episode in which Peter pitches Handy Quacks to the Fox Network. And the joke is that Peter and Chris can't conceive of a single joke to save their lives, but they think they're writing gold. I love it because I know people who write like that.

My favorite comedy done badly scene is Marlin in Finding Nemo telling the joke really badly. Everyone thinks that the clownfish is going to be the funny one. The outtakes of Albert Brooks doing the joke with awful delivery are a riot. "And then the sea cucumber turned and coughed. No, actually it was more of a sneeze."

The clueless color commentator is a classic trope in anything with a commentary. You have the play by play and you'd have the clueless guy with the totally out of left field comparison or anecdote.

A lot of it is timing and delivery. Fred Willard was a genius at it. I remember him from Fernwood Tonight the t talk show spin off from Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. The lame comic or clueless unfunny person trying to be funny goes back a long ways. You'd see it in Daffy Duck when the straight character would try something funny and Daffy looks at them and says "don't call us, we'll call you" or some other failed audition comeback.
