Betty Beatrice Burke was a normal young woman with normal aspirations. She had a job she loved driving trucks for the Army, a fiancé she loved even more than her job, and every reason to look forward to a bright future. That was until the “superhero,” Freedom’s Champion, literally flew into command of a pair of her Army convoys.

When the dust settled, her fiancé was dead, everyone in her squad was dead, and she was thrown out of the Army. To top things off, the final disaster had transformed her into a shapeshifter—a being made of mysterious “magical” metal.

Now Betty just wanted to fade away—move to the country, drive her truck, maybe have something like a normal life. Unfortunately, the government, the superhero community, and worst of all, Freedom’s Champion, were not through with her yet.

They were all about to find out that little Betty was more than they bargained for.

Good First Book by a New Author

I am friends with this author, so I will be up front and say my review may be slightly biased. I have followed this author’s online web comic from the beginning so I am already familiar with his writing style and shortcomings. The overall story line is good and there are many secondary characters that are interesting and would be fun to delve deeper into their stories. Unfortunately, I feel that the main character falls somewhat into the trap of being a “Mary Sue” character - meaning that she seems to get all the advantages and never has a major struggle that she cannot overcome (i.e. too powerful, too quickly.) Part of that may be the time skips that seem to happen throughout the book. There are parts where “this happened, and years later this happened, now a few months later this happened.” The time skip problem plagues even the best authors though. Anne McCaffery, who is one of my favorite authors of all time, also had several jarring time skips in many of her books in my opinion (I have been re-reading her books lately, so it’s easy for me to recall those issues).

I will say that when I started reading this book I went in expecting the typical superhero book, but it is anything but typical. I did not expect the hero origin background, but I wasn’t too surprised, as this same theme has shown up in his online web comic. He even makes mention of a couple of characters that appeared in his web comic and I am interested to see if he incorporates more characters and ideas from his web comic in future books. I’m a big fan and look forward to the next installment in the Academy Fire series.

This was a fun read! A wonderful first book from Freshman author A.E. Jack. It had the usual first time errors (mainly minor editing mistakes), but other than that, it was a great read. The action started from almost the very first page and almost never stopped. There is a very interesting take on the origin of Superheroes, and why they might not be that heroic. Well recommended.

I've been reading this author's web comic for several years, and enjoyed reading this tale. As some of the other reviewers noted, there are some first book issues that this author will surely improve upon with experience. There were perhaps too many characters introduced, the list of characters at the end helped a bit with that. I enjoyed the world building, and couldn't help myself mentally comparing the rich world of his web comic to the story I was reading. The story starts with a bang and continues to be filled with action. All in all, entertaining and nicely done. Can't wait for the next book.

Well written book I finished in one long sitting. Ex army woman develops powers but her experience with main stream supers is they are self centered jerks whole have no concern about collateral damage. One of the few books of this genre with a unique setting and a heroine who isn't sexualized.

I purchased this book because I like to support new writers, that and because I have followed his online comic for years. While this story was good there were several problems I had with it. Aside from the spelling errors and sometimes jumbled word choice which I can forgive my biggest problem with the book was that the author often explained the story instead of telling it. There were several cases of, 'This happened then this happened then this.' But there was no expanding upon the events, no fleshing them out to give them tension or depth or some type of emotional impact.

There was also never any real sense that the pivotal character was ever at any real risk and she was mastering new and totally alien abilities as if she was born with them.

This is an extension of the alternate Earth of his series Magical Misfits, and showed in the well established world it takes place in, where magic from his other story is bleeding into a world much like ours and causing people to be super-powered. The title character is transformed from a normal truck driver into a nearly indestructible creature of living metal, but we don't meet that person until later, we meet the metal woman in dire straights in the first few words of the book and get backstory later.

Overall I find this a delightful romp through a familiar but still new world.
