Hello again to anybody still reading this thread (which I hope people are). I wanted to make a share a little announcement that we just made in regards to the Challenge and the prizes that the Top 50 Entrants, 10 Semi-Finalists, and 3 Finalists will be receiving. There will hopefully be more coming in the following weeks, but we've definitely secured the below prizes for the “runners-up”. I'm particularly happy about this because last year, not only did the Top 50 have to pay their own way to San Diego (this year we're giving the Top 50 a $595 travel/accommodations stipend) but they were only given a t-shirt and a (albeit) very heartfelt thank you from yours truly (and the rest of Platinum, too, of course). This year, there will be some very cool stuff even if you don't end up being the winner. Check it out:
The Top 50 Entrants will receive:
Copies of Comic Book Creator software (http://www.mycomicbookcreator.com)
With 1 super pack of all versions (Marvel, Nickelodeon, Barnyard, etc.) going to the winner.
The Top 10 Semi-Finalists will receive:
Copies of Toon Boom Studios' software suites (http://www.toonboom.com/products/)
7 copies of Toon Boom Studio Express (for 7 of the ten semi-finalists) ($99.99 value each)
2 copies of Toon Boom Studio (for 2 of the 3 finalists) ($399.99 value each)
1 copy of Toon Boom Solo (for overall winner) ($2,999.99 value)
And the Top 3 Finalists will receive:
Wacom Tablets (http://www.wacom.com/productinfo/)
2 mid-size wacom tablets (for 2 of the 3 finalists)
1 large size wacom tablet (for overall winner)
Check out the websites above if you have any questions about the product. I'm not an expert on any of them, so I'm not going to help out much if you want to know more about them, unfortunately.
Thanks, as always, for listening to me blabber on about the Challenge.
Cheers,
Platinum Dan

Wow, I was just thinking it as a chance to get paid to draw a comic up for grabs, all this really sweetens the deal though, I'm seriously hoping I have a shot. Those are some great prizes.

Just getting into the top 50 was going to be pretty good for everyone. At least for street cred. ;)
Now it's worth even more. I do hope to make the top 3 though…that would really be nice to get a new Tablet. Mine is older than most of you on DD.

I don't normally open my big yap, as my foot tends to find its way in there on an alarmingy-regular basis, but I have something to say here regarding working for Platinum.
My situation's different from DJ's. Whereas he sold an original property to Platinum, and writes and draws something of his own creation, I'm working for them by writing and drawing a property that isn't mine at all–the KISS 4K Webcomic.
This is a property that's already owned by Platinum. I didn't create it. I didn't come up with the original idea. These aren't my characters by even the wildest stretch of the imagination. All I'm doing is taking someone else's characters and fleshing them out a bit, three days a week.
Now, if you were to take some of the previous posts (and way too many blog entries elsewhere) to heart, you could easily imagine me chained to my art table, slaving away while Platinum Dan stands behind me, whip in hand. You can imagine me dressed in rags, begging for a little bread and water as Dan and the rest of the Platinum people laugh at my misery while fanning themselves with fistfulls of hundred-dollar bills.
I should draw a picture of that. That's cracking me up. I won't, though, as some blog somewhere will run with it as UNDENIABLE PROOF OF THE EVILS OF PLATINUM ZOMG!!!11
I'm a little cog in a big machine called “KISS 4K”–probably the smallest cog of all, to tell you the truth. And you know what? I get treated like I'm THE MAN. My questions are answered, my recommendations are taken into consideration, and my humble little webcomic is given the same treatment as everything else these guys have going on. And the pay's nice, too. And prompt. I like that.
In short: Platinum's a Class Act to work for. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Next time you hear mud being slung around, take a look at who's doing the slinging. I'll bet you my eyeteeth it's not someone who is working for, or has ever worked for, Platinum. I'll bet you it's someone who's reading someone else's vitriol, and just passing it along.
If you have an idea that you want to keep the rights to, then keep ‘em. But if you have an idea or three (hell, I know I do) that you’d love to see in print, on screen, or whatever, you're going to have to sell the rights at some point. That's just how things work. And I can't think of a better place to trust those rights to than Platinum.
It's as simple as that. Now go read my freakin' webcomic! ;)

Dan's been pretty prompt (and positive) to all of my e-mails and platinum seems really legit. Fingers crossed they pick me and my silly penis comics up.

Adam, I would pay you for that picture. Seriously, thanks for the kind words, but you're ruining my rep as an evil corporate overload here. How am I going to strike fear into the hearts of the masses this way? :-)

Don't worry, Dan…. I'll always sing the Platinum Dan song in such a way it insinuates corporate overlordship. Overlordliness.
I had no idea I was slinging mud, and I did retract my comments… I was never interested in slamming Platinum in particular… just telling folks to think before they sign is all. It's been a lively thread. All we needed was a KISS reference, and now we have that too!

I would appreciate that. I would hate to have the only song ever written about me become invalid because people suddenly discovered I might not be evil incarnate. And I never thought you were slinging mud, either. People should know exactly what they're getting into before signing any contract with anyone. I said it once and I'll say it again, we're not for everyone and neither is the Comic Book Challenge. Anyway, it has been a lively conversation and one I've enjoyed immensely.

Hey what's with the Comic Book Challenge video on the front page right now? Is that from last years?

I used my detective skills (google) to find Drunk Duck's youtube page. A lot of the entrants from last year are on there, and the front page seems to cycle between them. Its amazing how shitty some people sell their comics. I'd go all out. I'm sure I can win them over with my high energy and charisma alone. Compared to some of the videos I saw, its like the worst looking nervous dork competition.

Hello everyone, I am extremely new to the Drunk Duck world. Thanks to everyone involved for having me. I have made a submission to the comic book challenge and I have read a lot of your comments abou the competition. I am not sure how to think. I have begun a comic page here with your webcomic community which has the actual submission artwork. Unfortunately the sketch work I have posted Is HUGE. The comic is called Alliedand I would really like your opinions on some of my art and ideas. Thank you again for having me in Drunk Duck.

The footage pictured in the video on the home page was from AFTER their pitches when we had somebody interviewing them about their experience during the pitch. A lot of them were in interview mode and not pitch mode, so please cut them a little slack. Most of them were just happy to have made it through the pitching session after WEEKS of leading up to a two minute pitch. It's not an easy thing to be in front of some industry superstars including the guy who created Witchblade and the lady who produced the Terminator, among others.

There was a lot of nervousness and a lot of waiting around too until your pitch time came. I got lucky and was third in line, but I know talking to other finalists you could see some nerves. Even for me, (I'm a giant dork!), pitching like this just isn't something you're use to doing as a cartoonist or comic creator, but now that I've done it, i think it's very helpful to know how to do it, and be ready to pitch your idea at a moments notice. You never know where you'll be in life or what opportunities might pop up out of the blue, so always be ready.

Where are the ACTUAL pitch videos? I'd much rather see THAT then some interview. The you tube videos are misleadingly labeled. I'd be willing to bet I'm not nervous at all and go in with my brass balls, take no shit attitude, and charismatic personality and get a comic book deal. Assuming I'm one of the chosen 50 finalists of course.
Also for those missing what I'm talking about, drunk ducks you tube page is over here at this link.

Some are interviews and some are pitches. You can tell the pitches because they are actually pitching their comic, and standing before a bunch of judges (sitting at a table).
The ones where Frederik has a microphone and is talking to them are the interviews.
The front page rotates so no doubt everyone is seeing a different video ;)

This question is geared at Mister Coffman.
You used a prop in your pitch to a great effect, do you recommend doing so to other contributors? Secondly, my submission revolves around a magical book, so would it be advisable to make a recreation of that book to show in my pitch, or is it too much in comparison to a ring?
