Woo. I went to an outdoor pool that gives away free cake on Canada Day. But they were taking too long so I just left.

Canada Day was a work day for me. I was doing face sketches and caricatures on the Green in Fredericton today, from noon till about 8PM. I was actually there much earlier because the sites are first-come-first-serve and the competition rivals the Oklahoma land rush. I made out well, better than last year actually, despite rather dull, misty weather. Nice to have a good tent/canopy combo for that. I packed up as dusk approached and went to my friend's house for the last few hours of her BBQ party and then out again to watch the fireworks before dragging myself home. It was just as well that I'd packed up when I did, because shortly after a fight broke out near the lighthouse at the riverside, not far from my site. Only takes a few asshats to ruin it for everyone.

I will be working at the art festival in downtown Fredericton for the next few days, through Sunday. If you're in town, you might see me then.

Take off for Canada have back bacon and beer. Coooo-rooookoo-koo coooo-rooookoo-koo

Unlike the USA, Canada has a national anthem you can sing sober and that is actually about something having to do with the country not just the bombardment of a fort in 1814.

Welcome to Canada, it's the Maple Leaf State.
Canada, oh Canada it's great!
The people are nice and they speak French too.
If you don't like it, man, you sniff glue.
The Great White North, their kilts are plaid,
Hosers take off, it's not half bad.
I want to be where yaks can run free,
Where Royal Mounties can arrest me.
Let's go to Canada, let's leave today,
Canada, oh, Canada, I Sil Vous Plait.
They've got trees, and mooses, and sled dogs,
Lots of lumber, and lumberjacks, and logs!
We all think it's kind of a drag,
That you have to go there to get milk in a bag.
They say “eh?” instead of “what?” or “duh?”
That's the mighty power of Canada.
I want to be where lemmings run into the sea,
Where the marmosets can attack me.
Let's go to Canada, let's leave today,
Canada, oh, Canada, I Sil Vous Plait.
Please, please, explain to me,
How this all has come to be,
We forgot to mention something here.
Did we say that William Shatner is a native citizen?
And Slurpees made from venison,
That's deer.
Let's go to Canada, let's leave today,
Canada, oh, Canada, I Sil Vous Plait.

Canadians are pretty awesome.
First Canadian I ever knew was my high school maths teacher. All he ever wore was a tight little t-shirt, a tight high pair of shorts that were so teeny they looked like hotpants and a pair of sandals.

All year round. Permanently.

At first we thought he was just weird… then superhuman. Man was immune to temperature. We thought he might be from Antarctica…

You're kidding, right? Our English national anthem is just horrible. It says absolutely nothing about our country. Unless you were talking about the French version? That one is a lot more meaningful.

So I went and saw fireworks…like half the city showed up to see them, but they didn't end up being very good.

Happy belated Canada Day!

I would have said something sooner but I spent yesterday going downtown for Canada Day celebrations, blowing up my wallet buying things, going shopping at one of the few malls opened (blowing up my wallet some more) before finally going back to my area of town to eat at The Keg with my brother (where I gave one final rib kick to my wallet.)

Then I spent the rest of the night rolling around with a full stomach.

I actually knew a German Exchange student who attended my high school, who sang our Canadian Anthem all the time. She was always humming it. I asked her one day, and she gave me a five minute speech, in German Psudoenglish, about how much better it was than the German one.

I stopped and actually thought about it. It's pretty good.

These are the lyrics to Oh Canada:

Oh, Canada
Our home and native land,
True patriot love
In all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts
We see thee rise,
The true, north, strong, and free.
From far and wide
Oh Canada
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land
Glorious and free.
Oh, Canada we stand on guard for thee,
Oh, Canada we stand on guard for thee.

No mention of anything about our heritage, culture, anything like that at all. It's like a “fill in the blanks” national anthem. Take out Canada and you could put almost any country in there instead.
Also, it bothers me that Canada considers itself so multicultural and diverse, and yet we mention God in our national anthem.
The tune isn't very nice either.

Edit: I should probably add that I have nothing against Canada(except Manitoba and Saskatchewan because they suck). I just think we have an awful national anthem, and they could definitely write one which better represented Canada.

The mention of God could be argued as a historical reference as can the part about the “native land” (Native American.) Keep in mind this was a song written in 1880. (Edit: Not that I'm an expert on Canadian history but I don't think the multicultural angle was well used in the 1880 if at all.)

I kind of like the national anthem personally. There's something nice in the simplicity of it and I particularly like the line “the true, north, strong, and free.”

No, our national anthem has been changed since then. The original version was in French…that version, as I said, is far more meaningful. The English version is NOT a translation of the original song, and the words have been changed a couple times since the first English version was written…the last time being in 1980. That was when the line about God was added.

I really don't know why we don't just use a translated version of the French one. Maybe the syllables don't all fit properly or something.

Actually, now that I'm looking this stuff up, apparently there were several other stanzas originally written for the English version that aren't actually included in our official anthem. They're a lot more related to Canada, though they have religious references as well(understandable, as they were written around 1910).

This is one of those verses:
O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western sea.
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North, strong and free!

See, I think we should use something like that.

Sounds too much like one of America's songs, the “Oh beautiful, for spacious skies” one (which is a much better song than the national anthem). They probably didn't want to look like they were copying. :]

What a nice national anthem. We actually officially have two, and one of them is pretty violent. The other one's much less so, but still. Not as nice and friendly as this one.

Besides that I don't really have much to add. It seems a bit odd to me to be celebrating something like that, but maybe that's because I live in a place that never really got a “fixed point of origin” or whatever it is. I honestly don't really know the details of this thing.

Do, uhm, belated yaye?
Because I may as well show a bit of pride. ^___^

actually, when i was younger, i always did think that america, the beautiful was the national anthem…it's much better than the star spangled banner. we should have a song about our country not our flag.

Canada Day was yesterday? No wonder people were shooting off fireworks last night.

You know, I lived in Canada for 5 years before moving down to US, and in Canadian schools we had to sing the Canadian national anthem every single day. It wasn't particularily annoying, but couple of my friends decided to have a bit of fun with it, singing it in different accents, beats, and stuff.

But damn, I miss New York Fries back there. Best fries I've ever had if you ask me. Bit ironic that it was founded in Canada.
“I like shooting, but I sure as hell don't like being shot at.”
