I have a clan name (that's technically my 4th name, which is not used in daily speak) that works the same way. Most clan names refer to a place where the family originated.

my friends and i devised an elaborate chart of allowed racial remarks based on the diveristy of those who you choose to associate with (not forced to associate with like coworkers). this chart only allows so much nagging on a certain persons race and gender based on stereotypes, populace, current events, and jackassiness. As a white person my allowed comment would be greatly lowered but because of my low levels of jackassiness, being female, and highly diverse set of friends i have a higher allowance of being racist. we regard the allowance as racist points, collect enough and you can say terrible terrible things for a short admount of time without guilt and fear of judgement. different things have different point values.

That was quite a confusing time for my childhood. When it happened, I was in Oman in the American school. After the day in question, the students sort of split in half between the Arabic kids and the Americans. It was worse because I was both American AND Arabic. Long story short, it took a bomb threat to return things to normal (I REALLY wish that was a joke).
