No one has been banned for over a month. The chat isn't too entirely active during the day, around 9 P.M. CST the chat picks up.

That's something called NickServ, which is part of most IRC networks. Someone already has Hawk as a registered nickname, so that wasn't anything to do with the #drunkduck channel or its admin.

I've been an IRCop, admin and Op across numerous IRC channels over the years. Right back when Quakenet had chan services and didn't have Q bots, etc. I'll tell you one thing from looking at this thread, the Top Drawer level of so-called humour I've seen displayed here would get you banned on any number of those channels.

I'm actually less impressed with the replies here by users and (some) admin, than I am with the #drunkduck channel at the moment. I'm willing to give the forum a chance however, even people like Sea Cow.

I have never had to kick/ban anyone in IRC just for the fun of it, that's something I have never agreed with. So now it seems I've inherited an Op position at the Unoffical DD channel, yet apparently according to SpaNG who hasn't even spoken to me, I'm already tarred with the same brush?

I invite anyone who actually wants to come and chat, to actually come and chat to me in the channel like AuroraMoon did yesterday. That's chat, not come to cause trouble because if you bring 4chan or TD humour into the chat, then once my level of patience wears thin I'll do what the admin did here to ApC (which he deserved) and ban.

I also invite a civil reply to this post and not an animated gif reply or a chart.

I'll also note that the first thing that ApC ever did to me when I entered the channel, back in January of this year was to kick me for excessive idling (when I'd gone afk to get a drink), so I am not defending him. I will however say that ApC has not returned to the channel since he was de-opped.

So I take it, this is the kind of thing that Drunk Duck's admin and community actively supports?

It seems that regardless of what currently goes on in the chat, due to what's gone on in the past and perhaps word of mouth from that, there's a bad image that needs to be overcome. I don't think anyone is making personal attacks here, but there are people posting in this thread who have said they've had negative experiences.


Also, do I really have to try to figure out a chat log if I want to get your point? Could you just… summarize? Looks like a lot of stupidity and offensiveness to me, like the Top Drawer in chat form. Why would we support it?

Thanks skoolmunkee, that's the kind of reply I was looking for. In short, some DD'ers decided to enter the channel and spend their time constructively spamming it, TD in chat form is a perfect example.

It's also nice to know that this kind of behaviour isn't supported by DD's admin. I do agree that what's gone on before left a bad taste in some people's mouths, but should the new admin there be made to pay for those mistakes and should they be tarred with the same brush?

No one was banned for the recent actions in the channel, but it doesn't really give me confidence in certain DD'forum users who abused the channel's chat-applet. Now had ApC been there, there'd be a lot of kick-bans…and I have to admit, with good reason.

I'm sure what was posted later on was a violation of Sorcery's AUP.

Maybe it would be good to get a summary of what kinds of things are welcome there, and what activities or types of chat might go on? Could someone show up if they wanted some comments on their comics, or a critique of something they've drawn? It's pretty difficult to get those here on the forums. Is there an art challenge night or any activities like that?

I'd be happy to post a news announcement to draw attention to the chat. I'd like to be able to talk about what's in it for folks besides the opportunity to chat with other DDers though. Also some people have no idea what IRC is, how to connect to it, etc, so some info about that would be welcome :)

Since I've recently taken over as one of the IRC @ (ops/mods) I'd only be too happy to liase. I'd like to see more comic discussion and definitely less of the stuff I posted in the log, which is only part by the way, the rest I didn't bother to post because it gets worse.

Critiques on something they've drawn, advice, ideas and general discussion are more than welcome. As long as the person being critiqued doesn't take it badly and the critic doesn't phrase their crit as: this comic sucks, learn to draw ;)

I like the idea of those other activities too, the art challenges etc. I'm a big proponent of community things like that.

I'll see what I can create regarding a user's guide (beginners) for IRC and post a copy of the AUP for Sorcery.net. Rude, anti-social behaviour is right out…but I can't hope that everyone would get that message (today proves just that) since there are folks out there that live to be like 4Chan.

The idea has truly become the insitution, what was once edgy and daring, has now become big and emulated. But that's my rant, and I'll not go on. People are more than welcome to have a laugh and chat. I'd like to see the bad name of the room become a thing of the past.

We also tend to talk about print comics, TV shows, movies, anime, and games/console games in there, so there's a lot to talk about.

My fave thing with chat was just being social and goofing off…

Se_cow's behaviour is inappropriate. We don't control what people do on other parts of the internet, but crowing about stupid behaviour in the DD IRC in this thread about that channel, is the sort of thing that will get you a ban here.

the point is, he is gone, and he was the only thing holding back the expansion of the chatroom… because he was such a git.

I was originally going to make a new thread for this entitled “#drunkduck Reboot”

Not that we were ever widely known, but the majority of you that have heard of #drunkduck tended to stay away because you heard some things. As of late, what with TheDoctor leaving after being demoted and his core group following him elsewhere, and other regulars being busy with other things, (Azeroth has stolen my soul… for now) an opportunity has arisen for any of you interested to become a new regular and make the room what you want it to be. (Hopefully something nice.)

The biggest complaint I've seen in here about our IRC channel is that it's worse than Top Drawer. Sometimes accompanied by snippets of chat that… include members of top drawer. That stuff only happens when a select group of new people come in and don't treat the room with respect… they offend other new people (and the regulars) who have no idea that the kind of behavior they witnessed is not the norm and leave before they find out we don't tolerate it.

The biggest complaint with any IRC channel is boredom… a lot of people become discouraged with IRC because, while the conversation is real time, when nobody is talking there's not a forum style chat archive available to keep you busy until someone else shows up… Also, a lot of people just sit there waiting for someone else to talk when if they just threw something out there, they'd probably get a long conversation going.

I also recall someone in another thread (well, now this thread) saying “I used to like chat rooms… when i was 12.” They probably remember pulling juvenile antics in chat rooms full of other 12 year olds… (I find this ironic, as this person makes and reads comics and is probably fully aware of the “comics are just for kids” stigma when they know there are all kinds of comics out there for all kinds of peole.)

In it's current incarnation, the room is headed by Fenriswolf (Who you know as DoctorShadow) with support from longtime regulars Blu, lakattack, Killersteak and on the rare occasion when i'm not killing furbolgs and naga… myself. General topics range from but are not restricted to books, movies, music, comics (print and web), and games among other general life interests. On occasion things get political or news driven.

The chat's died even more in the month since rockstar tried reaching out. The room needs people that chat and from the very small surge from when this thread started there seems to be about 4 type of people we got

- people killing time for about 15 min before nicking off to whatever they were really going to do
- people looking for other people to do their work for them (collab) or look at their work for them, then leaving cos noone in the chat does that
-TDers who popped in and well you know how they behave
-People that log in for a 30 seconds and quit because apparently if someone doesn't say hi in that time noone is

Now you're not about to get admin from here or TDers and I'm pretty sure you didn't want either groups in there anyway so that leaves you low on DD people that might actually be interested in a DD room. Who are you reaching out to at this stage? people have their own things to do and other chatrooms they're in and as I found out there's no point in keeping IRC open when nothing happens for hours on end and I can chat with the people I want to elsewhere. The chat was in a state of decline a while before I started there and it's just kept going that way over the last year. #DD is less likely to get people while it's not a legit room supported by the community and while its focus is on a community of people that have proved they have no interest in being there.
