To use Homepage or not?

I am not sure whether to use a homepage here on DD or just let people go straight to the comic page. If you use homepage people have to click to leave a comment and as we all now people like things simple and easy. Would it stop you from leaving a comment?

What's your thoughts?

Not sure where this goes, but it's not a Debate and Discussion topic :)

I don't use the Home page feature.

No way. Not the way it's working right now at least.

I also think it's useless unless you have a DIFFERENT image than your current page. It just makes it annoying for this reader. And yes, it does stop me from leaving comments. :/

EDIT: Durf you mean the home page for comics. I'm smart.

I never used it, always thought it was easier to leave it normal so people could view comments right away/not have to click to move past it to view anything else. Kinda' seems like an avoidable middle man to me.

It's been annoying me since its inception. Really annoying before they changed the Latest button to go to the previous page. It's still annoying not seeing comments on the page, without having to click anything.

I agree with all that's been said so far. I've seen some fine comics use it, but mostly the ones that have a set image there. Otherwise I find you get less comments than with a regular style.
A Roll of the Dice now with full-size pages!

John Clyde now with ten times the tacky Hawaiian shirts!

I'm thinking of getting rid of mine because of the comment issue… it's a pain for people to have to click back and forth just to get to the comment box, and if they post under the blog instead, I don't see it because there's no notificiation.

I do like the blog feature, though, that's why I still have one…

I gotta agree. I don't like using the homepage option, and comics that use it generally annoy me. I like to see the latest page of the comics I visit regularly and see the comments and comments box without having to click on anything. Even when it's working properly, it's annoying. – But considering that the “Latest” button on the homepage takes you to the next to last page and the comments link is glitchy if you do something to the forum, it is really inconvenient.

(The only thing I liked it for was a recommended comics list and chapter list, but you can add those in with custom html.)

Anyway, unless you have an important disclaimer (like with adult comics or something) or your comic is already a completed project with no more updates on the way, I think it's best to not use the homepage option.

I actually tend to not click on fav'd comics with homepages.
To much of a hassle, and I've got lots more to view.

I don't use a homepage, I get more comments if I don't use it.

There's a chapter tag that works on normal pages aswell.

I agree too. Nobody actually pays any attention to it, people. They just want to see your comic page.

The homepage feature is very annoying. I used the homepage for about a week very early on in the life of Shades. The feedback I had from readers was that it was not popular, so I abandoned it.

The upside is that a homepage can generate some extra page views (I don't know whether the homepage itself generates a “view” but that wretched “Latest” button always links to the page before the last!) The downside is that it irritates readers and - as others have said - is likely to reduce the number of comments you receive.

Personally, I decided a few extra pageviews wasn't a good enough reason to put a barrier between the readers and the comic, or to drive away potential commenters. I mean … we all loves us those readers' comments, right?!

Not using it - and I prefer comics that don't use it, (however, if the comic is good enough, I'll go through the hassle of seeing the latest page) - because it puts an extra barrier between my readers and my comic which doesn't really have any positive consequences. It's just irritating.
The Continued Misadventures of Bonebird - a poor bird's quest for the ever-elusive and delicious apples.

I think I asked them to change the Latest button to the next to last page (not sure if it was because of me they changed it), since it was annoying to have to click Latest, see the same exact page, then click back to see if I missed a page. I should have asked for them to keep Latest button (as it functioned initially), AND add a Back button on the homepage.

I started with the home page as an “informational” page… i thought it might be easier for Non-DDers. I had a “story so far” and a blog… that kinda thing. And since my comic is a story, I thought it would be nice for people not familiar with it to be able to go to the first page without seeing the last page….

But, I wasn't accomplishing what I wanted to, and I noticed most DDers don't use it. So I've since ditched it. Page views are up, comments are up. Ranking is up. So… thats pretty good!

I am kind of annoyed though that I can't put my comic blog on my comic pages…. only the page comments…. I'm investigating a way to remedy that (if anyone has any ideas… let me know!).

Also, yeah, if you don't have something other than you current page on your homepage, there's really no point. I hate going to a page, wanting to comment/rate, and then having to go through the previous page to get to the page i was just looking at, just to leave a comment. The more clicks it takes, the less likely people will bother.

The way the home page currently functions makes it somewhat pointless, in my view. The reasons not to use it have been covered very thoroughly already, I just thought I'd chime in my support for not using the home page function.
