I would give my right pinky for some documentation of the variables on this site that was worth any salt. As it is, discovering how to make things work here is a very, very painful process. Extremely painful. I do believe my brain is starting to bleed out of my ears just looking for something as simple as the ‘homepage URL’ variable - which apparently does not exist. Oh, joy. So, checking ‘create blog’ and ‘use forum as blog’ makes a nice kind of news-post replacement. This is a comment tag to the original post. I believe it will not be shown on the front page; instead, readers will be shunted to the DD forum to read the commentary (or add their own) right here.

Hmm, I do wonder how you get more than one forum item at a time on the front page, or if that's even possible.
