Video demos:

_____________

I heard that we can get a playable demo at the end of this week/next week.

I am finalising the list of playable characters so people can stop asking. Making some form of party system will be hell. Thank God for internet! Decided to add Pastel as a playable character as honestly, I prefer female playable characters… also, enjoy your weapon list:
- Aqua - Knives, Swords
- Kitty - Hula Hoop
- Avalon - Drills, Guns (You can have a fishing rod as a special weapon…)
- Liao - Rose Whip >:3
- Shplane - Knives, Staff
- NLTC - Aura, Explosives
- Dragonizer - Claws
- Pastel - Giant Pencil/Paint Brush
- (Secret additional character) - Shuriken

Any character who is not playable but is K.A.L.A-dan related, shall be an NPC, or perhaps at one point in a battle but contolled by the computer.

Now, I'm debating the fact ‘even more playable characters?!’. Theres already 9, each will be able to level to level 50 (If I make the game long enough, level 100). Each character shall have 30-45 skills each, with the ability for each character to learn more skills through the ‘Skill Manual’ system. Also, side-quests and main story…

Some characters will be able to ‘share’ weaponary, for example Aqua and Shplane will both be able to equip Knives, as well as Swords/Staffs, but not at the same time. Avalon and Dragonizer will be able to ‘duel wield’, use two weapons at once.

Each character can unlock special tag team attacks depending on their relationship with other members. Relationship is increased by doing tasks for that character, following sub-plots, or just viewing cutscenes.

Cookery and Forging will be included so you can create potions, weapons and the like out of your own resources.

This is all I am giving away about the game for now. I also have the plot pretty much figured out as well… Just need to fill a few plot holes.

Just adding an update on characters, and why I lost my sanity over Kitty's character last night. Also, overdrive/limit break system?

Aqua
Voice: Shiki Nanaya - Melty Blood
I'm not estimating the number of weapons that can be purchased as that will depend on game length, but Aqua uses single swords and knives, and later (if possible) can duel wield two weapons, if not he can attack twice with a normal attack.
Skills:
Mainly attacking skills with added effects, such as paralysis, stunned and confusion. Has leadership skills which boost attack, defence, etc. Aqua learns all his skills by leveling up.

Kitty
Voice: Ciel - Melty Blood
Uses a hula hoop. Can only equip one weapon. Some accessories can be only equipped by Kitty, or some are just gender specific.
Skills:
Genius skill system! Kitty, unlike other members skills has ‘Hoop Teq’ and ‘Moe Moe’. ‘Moe Moe’ is a normal attack which gives Kitty a chance to learn a new skill whenever she uses it. This could mean Kitty could learn her best move within her first few battles. With each character learning 30-40 skills, theres a large chance Kitty will learn new moves at the start, but towards the end of the game, getting new skills will be much harder for her.

Avalon
Voice: Chipp - Guilty Gear
Uses pistols, for which I was contemplating an ammo system whereby Avalon always has the same gun equipped but you choose which ammo goes in the gun which changes the damage, but that seemes too complex… So I'll stick with standard weapon system. Avalon can equip two weapons meaning he can attack twice. His weapons do lots of damage toward the start of the game but never gain any real power, instead Avalon can fire the same gun multiple times, the maximum being Avalon can attack normally with two pistols eight times.
Skills:
Generic ‘monster hunter’ skills, where Avalon learns skills dependant on killing specific types of enemies, e.g. Shutdown deals extra damage to machines, Hive Smasher deals extra damage to insects, etc. Also learns ‘Turnabout’ skills, referencing to Phoenix Wright. Specialises in lowering enemy stats and wrecking MP.

Liao :3
Voice: Shiki Tohno - Melty Blood
Liao uses a rose, which he throws. Abandoned the ‘rose whip’ idea, because I am lazy… Or did I? Can only equip one weapon and requires specialist equipment in some cases.
Skills:
'White Mage' of the group. Provides healing spells and defensive buffs, and some holy magic later on. Also has ‘Bishie Teq’ whereby Liao can use moves such as ‘Swagger’ and ‘Charm’ to lower attack power and confuse targets (lol Pokemon references). Has specialist moves whereby Liao can inflict ‘Love’, meaning the afflicted target may not attack. Can combo with ‘Heartbreaker’ which deals additional damage to targets afflicted with ‘Love’.

Shplane
Voice: Dan Hibiki - Street Fighter
Referencing to Final Fantasy, Shplane may only equip staffs and knives. Staffs increase magical attack powers and effects while knives increase combat ability, and with Shplanes skills, you can choose to make him either a fighter or a spellcaster, perhaps more of a Red Mage than Black Mage.
Skills:
Casts black magic spells, including Water, Fire, Thunder and Blizzard. Can learn extensions of the spells which hit all enemies at once. Later learns Quake and then Non-elemental magic. Learns a few supportive skills such as ‘Focus’ to boost magic attack. ‘Knife Teq’ allows Shplane to use elemental physical attacks, allowing elemntal damage to be delt to magic resistant enemies.

NLTC
Voice: Ken - Street Fighter
Equips ‘Auras’ which provide NLTC to cast various skills, for example equip ‘Toxic Aura’ to be able to cast Poison spells, or ‘Flame Aura’ to cast fire magic. Is limited in his equipment which appears less frequently then other members equipment which can be bought.
Skills:
As mentioned, NLTC can get skills through equipping different ‘Auras’, though when he changes Aura, the old skills are lost in favour of the new skills learnt with the Aura equipped. He also learns Dark magic spells which specialise in ttaking down Holy enemies. Can learn spells which shutdown spellcasters, such as Anti-Magic which stops any spells being cast and Anti-Skill which stops any type of skill from being cast.

Dragonizer
Voice: Athena - King of Fighters
Changed my mind on Dragon being Nyx, but instead walks around as Dragon but uses Nyx as a weapon, being able to equip collars and ribbons as weapons to boost Nyx's damage and the number of times she attacks. Removed her duel wield ability.
Skills:
Borrowing Rinoa's skill system from Final Fantasy VIII, Dragon can buy magazines which teach Nyx new skills, from elemental attacks to supportive skills, Dragon is probally the most all round character as she covers most skill types, but she never becomes efficient in any one of them, and because of this, Dragon only has one skill section, ‘Nyx Teq’.

Pastel
Voice: Ingrid - Street Fighter
Keeping the giant paint brush, Pastel's weapons focus more on effects rather than damage, adding poison or confusion to her normal attacks.
Skills:
Pastel can use ‘Sketch’ instead of an attack to attempt to steal an enemies skill for her to use. If she finds an enemy that she can steal a skill from, it will be added to ‘Fiend Teq’ and can be used like a normal skill. She also learns Wind magic as she levels, which can create shields or be used to attack enemies.

Secret Character may be removed due to the large ammount of characters already included, though time will have to tell…
—————————————–
Bonus features (pending)

Dango Capturing
All characters can buy the skill ‘Dango Capture’ via the ‘Skill Manual’ system, which when used on a Dango will capture it if it's health is low enough. When captured, the Dango will reward you with an item, and then flee. Be sure to grab Dangos fast as they appear in the think of battles and flee after so many turns.

Cooking
Some enemies may drop what you may think are useless items. These items can be used in cooking to create additional items. There are also ‘Gather Points’ where you can use the correct tools to extract items which can be used in cooking. Cooking supplies can also be bought from shops.

Forging
Similar to that of cooking, only allowing you to create your own armour and accessories.

Relationships
Hmm… I may be able to pull this off with my new found use of variables. Before I was being hopeful but now I'm pretty sure I can pull this off.
During some cutscenes, characters may ask you to help them, or ask you to answer a question for them. Complete the task or answer the question correctly and you will recieve a relationship boost, a hidden score for all the Kala-dan characters. When you get a boost, the score you have with that character will increase. When your score is at a certain level with a character you may be given items by the character or may be taken on hidden sidequests. At the end of the game, your scores with every character will be revealed so you will know who you treated the best and worst.

Party Forming
Success! Originally, Aqua would always need to be in the party, a la Final Fantasy VII. Now, you play the game as Aqua, but with any combination characters you want in your party and progress through the game in the eyes of the Kala-dan, with the whole group taking on missions. In my oppinion this is a huge step forward from instead always having to use Aqua.
—————————————–

Summons
As shown in the third trailer video thingy, Kitty used the Hitachiin Gem. These will be summons which basically cameo anime into the battles and inflict various effects or deal damage. Gems can only be used once before disappearing, though can be bought froma special shop. Gems can be upgraded to Stones, which can be used repeatedly without running out.
Here is a list of current summons and their abilities:

Hitachiin Gem - Hikaru and Kaoru
May confuse all enemies.

Aensland Gem - Morrigan
Deals dark physical damage to one enemy.

Cicada Gem - Ryuga Rena
Deals heavy physical dmaage to one enemy.

Esper Gem - Itsuki Koizumi
Deals medium fire damage to one enemy.

Cycle Gem - Nanaka Crash
Has a chance to instantly kill one enemy.

Half Gem - Ranma
May stun all enemies.

Aaron Gem - Lucario
Dark and Holy damage on all enemies.

Precious Gem - Marisa
Wind damage on all enemies.

PoPoLo Gem - Narcia
Heals 50% of the parties damage and remove all status effects.

Shibuya Gem - Joshua
Heavy holy damage on one enemy.

Phones Gem - Neku
Thunder and Ice damage to all enemies.

Kart Gem - Shy Guys
Deal damage and could stun all enemies.

Vocaloid Gem - Hatsune Miku
Removes Silence from the party and provide an immunity to Silence for five turns.

Closed Gem - Yuki Nagato
Boosts defence of the party and lowers damage from magic attacks.

Reaction Gem - Ryoko Asakura
Deals little damage to one enemy. Hits multiple times.
—————————————–

Well thats about it. If you have any questions, ideas, or criticism feel free to leave a comment. :3

Note: If you have a summon idea, I would appreciate a link to already availible sprites if possible to save me making them as I am quite lazy… Yeah… >:3

Ooh! This looks awesome! Great job so far, Liao!

And voices from Melty Blood? I saw that game while I was in Japan and I've been wanting to play it since then buuuuuuut I haven't been able to find it! :(

Also, I like Aqua's sexy dance (for his in-battle sprite). And was that the song from the Fullmetal Alchemist op? Oh, and if I make an appearance, be it a PC or an NPC, could my weapon be a katana/fists. If not, that's okay, and if I don't make an appearance, then don't worry about it. :)

Mmm…

I was actually hoping for more. The tiny party size limit has always bugged me in RPG's. I mean really, why CAN'T everyone fight? What is the logic behind this guys? It'd make you more likely to save the damn world?

Oh well though, beggers can't be choosers and all that. I'll play it either way, 'cause it looks pretty awesome.

If he's using one of the RPG Maker programs, as I think he is, you can actually modify that variable. I've seen games with parties as large as 12.

I've played an RPG with over 100 playable characters. But specifically in the battle system, there tend to be only 1-4.

Generally RPG's are turn-based. With the amount of monsters one tends to encounter in these games, having too many characters per fighting sequence would delay the game, be too repetitive, and cause people to quickly become restless and frustrated with the game.

Suikoden.

There's several of them. Two for the PS and the rest for PS2.

It's based on an old chinese legend concerning 108 “Stars of Destiny”.

Put moar or bigger monsters.

Also, technical limitations don't matter much any more with the kind of technology we have right now. I mean they can have a million things on the screen, all of which are running in a more complicated fashion that a few people in a turn-based RPG.

It's not about technical limitations, it's about people limitations.

It's been proven that all animals (including humans) can efficiently do up to 3 things at once. It gets harder after that, give or take a few depending on the individual.

Then why do RTS's and large scale tactical RPG's work? When you have hundreds of troops (In the case of RTS's) and maybe 10 to 20 characters on the screen (In tactial RPG's)?

If you've ever played an RTS, you know that you're doing a LOT more than 3 things at once. And that's one of my favorite genres.

The trick is in how you remember it, versus how it actually functions in your head:
One continued thought chain to oversee the situation, with two or three that vary to make individual choices before being redirected by the aforementioned lasting thought sequence.

Also, I think I'm starting to understand the meaning of the term “Magnificent Bastard”

Thing is, it's a turn based RPG.

Thus you're really only doing one person's “turn” at once anyway.

Think about it though: More important than even splitting a person's patience is not pressing their patience. I don't like long battles much… who does?
The only other method I can think of is have all of the characters and have an in-battle character change system… but keep the monsters strong, as if you had the full party out at once. It'd make the battles pretty epic… especially if there was automatic healing when a character was not in battle.

Long battles are the best! Getting into a set routine, keeping your support chracter buffing and rebuffing, your main slashing away, your tank taking the brunt of the damage and then the space for your favourite character at the side!

Long battles with extra scenes are fun too, such as freeing your allies and having them fight with you in that battle, having to fight against a timer until your allies reach you to help fight off an attacking force.

But, to his their own. Cannot cater to everyones needs. ;3

Hmhmhm intresting. In battle character change system? Oh how difficult to make!
However, you have given me a good idea. Characters not in the party heal as you walk about! GENIUS! Fun times…

Also, SUMMONS! Added Kaiba, and Mion.

Also also, COMBINATIONS! It seems I can create skills whereby, for example:
Avalon casts ‘A.A. Combination’
*wait*
Aqua's turn.
Aqua uses ‘Sword Teq’ HOWEVER because Avalon casted a combo skill before ‘Sword Teq’ automatically casts ‘A.A.Attack!’ where Avalon and Aqua attack together! Yaaaay!

Also, 'bout that demo. Yeah… In due course my friends. ~w~
