Do you mean visually more attractive or more endearing/appealing in personality?

Visuals vary a LOT, and people have different taste. Generally speaking, fewer details, especially in the face, make characters look more youthful. Aside from that, there is so much difference in style and what people like, I'd say to pick a style you find visually beautiful and see if you can use it as a foundation for your own. Get a feel for the line strokes and proportions you find appealing. (There's all kinds of art theory on “perfect ratios” but it doesn't always appeal in practice.)

In terms of writing (and art to some degree), it's important to make characters relatable and/or intriguing. Flawless characters are boring. Overly flawed characters are annoying. A bit of humor can help make a character likable and relatable as long as it's not mean-spirited humor.

In terms of visuals/appearance, I normally tell people to draw what they like to see. I think it's super important to draw and write for yourself, when you create something for an audience but you don't enjoy it, especially if it's a webcomic, where it's free for the public to read, you can really burn yourself out on it and give up on your projects.

Daily practice does help, look at the styles of other artists that you admire, watch their techniques if you can and practice it yourself. Slowly but surely you'll get to where you want to go.

Now in terms of writing I think usedbooks got it right. But be careful with how relatable you make your characters, it can get to a point where some people find it boring. Normally people like to see something different/interesting with some realism to it.

See what is attractive to you and draw it! I use heromachine to grasp what my characters look like in the attractive scale. Here>> http://www.heromachine.com/

Attractive to whom?

Readers, critics, yourself. All three?

Attractiveness is subjective so not everyone likes the same things. You have to decide exactly who you intend to please.

There’s something called the Golden Ratio of facial beauty. It’s an ideal dimension of a person’s face. 1:1.61 ratio, or 1-1/2 times longer than it is wide. There’s a Golden Ratio Calculator here:

It works for most everything from architecture to nature.

Other than that, just give them bigger eyes. :-)

I've been working up a gag type strip and I gave them bigger eyes. Trouble is I have to keep my wits about me or they keep shrinking back to normal eye size, so I drew a Bratz doll for a style guide.

That turned out to be a useful exercise in terms of attractive character design, if we're talking visually. But one person's idea of attractive could be another's vision of hell.

attractive … ? sometimes i remember soem dream i had the night before .. just barely . but, who do you want to attract? I think all the drawing is at its base wish fulfillment , unless you are telling story and dont give a fuck about being ascthetically pleasing .. and that is prolly where you really want to be as an “artist” communivcate your idea and dont worry about eye candy . lol , but who am i to talk . i draw porn … but thats what i enjoy drawing IDGAF
