Mystery Subscriptions

What odd things are you subscribed to, or maybe found yourself subscribed to with no idea how it happened?

I have no recollection of subscribing to Ron Gordon's Ukulele Learners Group in New York State. Every time I get an update about the next ukulele jam in Saratoga, I go to unsubscribe but then I think, what if Ron is having a bad day? What if his whole life is falling apart and that ukulele group is the one thing keeping him going? What if he's standing on the precipice, thinking ‘I’m not a failure, my ukulele strummers still need me. There's even that one guy in London England following our every strum!' and at precisely that moment, I unsubscribe? It doesn't bear thinking about.

Maybe I'll make it to that all skill levels welcome jam in Voorheesville some day.

Was that relating to the place, or was it more of a knitwear thing?

You must always stay subbed to them XD

I'm mysteriously subbed to various newsletters about fashion, jewellery, an antique weapons, firearms and armour auction house, “Dinner en Blanc” invites, a newsletter for the best places to do adult adverting… I don't know how I got subbed to that!

And for some reason I get updates on my phone for some poor person's dental appointments, and emails from some child's school about family counselling appointments for jnr.
Thank god those last have finally stopped!

That's an impressive collection! The last one reminds me of when my daughter was born and we kept getting health visitors coming around every other day. We just thought it was a really good service until one of them asked my wife if she was still self harming. Turns out they had her notes mixed up with the woman in the bed opposite.

I'm subscribed to something called “Interesting Literature” and can't unsubscribe because I don't want them to think they're uninteresting.

That is one prosaic name for a website and I don't use the word lightly. Probably never used it before in fact.
It looks a one man show, all written by a Doctor of English at Loughborough University. The most interesting thing about it for me is I used to pass through Loughborough every day but never stopped there, so I don't know how interesting Loughborough is, or if anyone outside the UK knows how to pronounce it.
So much synchronicity in this thread.

I'm not sure. I never click on the emails. They keep coming even after flagging them as spam.

Was that relating to the place, or was it more of a knitwear thing?

I've apparently been subscribed to some website that makes and sells reproduction items for historical wars, such as WW2, but I'm assuming maybe it's because I've bought items (namely Radar O'Reilly hats) from other similar and reputable sites like WWII Impressions and At the Front - the latter of which I once ordered one of those 5-button sweaters from, like you see various characters on M*A*S*H wear during those cold snap episodes.

I was pretty upset when that show ended. Watching it in my room on a little black and white portable telly was a highlight of my week. Wish I still had my M*A*S*H Tshirt from back then and I always wanted a Grape Nihi too, but they didn't sell that in the UK, or any grape flavoured drink really. We drink blackcurrants instead.

There was a store where I taught that carried the whole Nehi line. Yes, there are more flavors than just grape. As for five button sweaters they are an alternative issue item in the US Army. I had two during my time in service. They were finally replaced by various synthetic turtlenecks. Much more comfortable.
The five button sweater was first introduced in WW2 for wear with the M44 pattern field uniform(where the ubiquitous field jacket first appeared)

I used to have a subscription for military clothing but it ended I was discharged. Every online retailer I've ever ordered from has me on their subscription list. It's so much junk email. I could unsubscribe but it's nice to hear about new releases and sales in case I ever win the lottery and have money to spend on anything. My car came with XM radio, so there's that subscription with new channels and listening suggestions even though I don't actually have the service anymore.

I often get asked if I drink Grape Nehi, and I confess I do not . . . carbonation does not agree with me, I can't drink anything carbonated. However, I will say that up until 2009, whereas Radar loved his Grape Nehi, and Kel was obsessively fond of orange soda, Apple Snapple was my Kryptonite . . . but then in 2009, they started using different ingredients, and the stuff went from tasting like biting into a fresh apple without biting into a fresh apple to tasting like apple-flavored Jolly Rancher. Blah.

A lot of those uniform accessories that used to be 100% wool are more commonly made of a wool/poly blend, or are 100% acrylic instead to not only make them more comfortable to wear than super-scratchy all-wool, but also to make them last longer. I can attest to this: I've been able to wash my hats in the wachine machine and dry them in the dryer (on low and delicate settings, mind you), and they come out just fine . . . but when my dad once tried to do that with a modern-day government-issued jeep cap that was made of all-wool he had, it ended up turning into a fuzzy green thimble.

Also, FWIW, I recently discovered a military surplus store in Japan called, not surprisingly, MASH Co. Even with the conversion from Yen to USD, their items are pretty pricy (not to mention shipping and handling), but I have to say, they have hands-down the best reproduction jeep caps I have ever seen - even better than most of these American-based reproduction outlets, like the aforementioned WWII Impressions and At the Front. With these American outlets, I find there's always something off about their jeep caps: usually the size or shape of the bill, or other little details aren't quite right, but one of the major problems is with many of them only offering the caps in “one size fits all” they're usually too snug to fit my 7 5/8 head. The Japanese-made jeep caps are spot-on in every single detail: the color, the weave, the size and shape of the bill, they look, wear, and feel great. I have two of theirs, a medium and a large - the medium was likewise too snug for me and I ended up having to stretch it out to fit, but they later offered the large size, and I never even had to break it in, it fit perfectly from the get-go. Worth every penny.

My main quibble with these outlets is that they always are out of stock on their items, it takes forever to restock them, and when they do, they almost immediately run out of stock. Right now, I've been waiting nearly 4 years for WWII Impressions to restock their OD long winter underwear; I have a pair of bottoms, but not a top, and that's what I've been waiting for. Similarly, I'm waiting to see who will soon have the 2nd pattern HBT coveralls in a size I can wear.

Just wait until you're over fifty and everything gives you gas. Ugh. It's a treat when I eat out. Next day it's Gas-ex once the cramps start.

Interesting. You do Korean War reenacting?

By the way, Army issue long Johns were actually always wheat colored. It was up to the soldier if he wanted them olive drab. Itchy wool blend that barely
worked. Might still have a pair of bottoms
somewhere. Definitely did not keep out that wonderful damp cold of nonstop sleet in Western Pennsylvania let alone the icy bone chill of central Germany.

Having been a field combat arms type I sort of became an expert on long underwear because I was so cold that I got to the “I'll never be warm again” stage. Fortunately I didn't stop shivering and go into the “let's just go to sleep” of hypothermia. That happened fifteen years later. That was in the Chosin Reservoir cold of below zero (to use a Korean War reference)

Yeesh, certain things can already give me cramps like that without warning, and they are not plesant. Otherwise, my doctors have told me it's around 40 when I get to start looking forward to the fun stuff every year (i.e. having fingers shoved up where they ain't supposed to; turn your head and cough; that sort of thing).

Right now, they have only been offered in OD or off white, but they say they have plans for the “oatmeal shade” as they call it in the future, but I have been a little curious about that.
