the rent that goes up and down is a thing .. locals can live there till tourist season then you have to move out or pay a huge rent increase.. this way the property can be rented by the day or week for tourists. we found an add for a van for rent by the month under the category of studio apartment this week,.. no telling what we might find for rent next week,,,
Ugh, was watching this YT video about Detroit, and how homes are practically given away because literally no one wants to live there. MI winters and lack of jobs and high crime has a lot to do with it. The fact that the blight has lead to 10's of thousands of buildings just rotting ain't helping, either. It would cost a lot of money to get them fixed - and the city is $20B in debt so don't expect much help there! :/

Rents in certain parts of the country are ridiculous, especially huge cities and tourist destinations. I'm thankful to live in a suburb that has virtually no tourism appeal. Sorry to hear that you have to shell out so much money for properties that aren't very nice.
