Forests are kind of magical but also really scary when you're a kid. We had a small woods at the bottom of the hill from my backyard when I was growing up. It was just big enough to get lost in for a while but not big enough that you couldn't find your way out again, as long as you didn't walk in circles. There were streams running through it, and a beer can pile where teens would go to drink, and if you made it far enough there was a huge running track, and right past that was a grave yard that led out to the highway. It was a nice break from civilization, going someplace where nature ruled instead of humans.
