I use to be afraid to unpack my fav books when I was a kid..my books back then.. Leo the lop.. the story wasn't much but i loved the art.. The Werefox, my fathers dragon,,, a Greek myths color book….the adventured of scrooge mc duck ..i also had a Jehovah witness children's bible that was very Maccabean and grim.. (oddly I own none of those books today) .. because i got moved around so much and often you only got to take what you could grab real fast….so the safest place to keep them was in my bed roll or laundry bag.. sometimes I walk around book shops and decide Im not ready for the emotional trip a book can be.. with an old friend book i know where they want to take me.. and if i want to go to that place…
Sorry to hear about your situation, but I'm at least glad to hear that Riley's stories have helped you get by in your time of need, and I hope that, like her, you can get through it and find a home again.
I'm very glad that you were able to hold onto something after all these years. I know how tough it can be to move into a place, think everything's going to be all right, and then have that dashed. But hopefully this will continue to work out for you and finally you can relax and live again. And it sounds like your new job is tough because it's at a school or something similar and given you were once a math teacher... well I can fully understand how much you want to go back to making a curriculum for teaching kids again.
There's a lot of cool history to mathematics, and some colorful characters too. Archimedes, Newton, Gauss, and Euler are considered the big four and they have fascinating life stories, but there are lots of little guys who made important jumps in the field too. And The Imitation Game is worth seeing, it's a fine biography of Alan Turing.

Books are densely packed with memories. Sometimes I remember what it was like to be a teenager when rereading Lord of the Rings or Thoreau.
